Hampton Bays Middle School
Parent Express Bulletin #14
Generosity
Character Counts at HBMS. This priority can be seen through efforts such as Friday's PTO-sponsored assembly program (thank you PTO!). We also host a quarterly Rising to the Challenge celebration, and, each month, we recognize an HBMS Student of the Month. You can learn more here about how Character Counts at HBMS: http://www.hbschools.us/our_schools/character_education .
But did you know we also offer opportunities to discuss and learn about the character education word of the month during our Advisory Program?
For example, in December, we celebrate the character education word Generosity. (In case you wondered, September is Respect, October is Responsibility, and November is Gratitude). This is a tradition that has carried over from the elementary school, but it looks somewhat different for our adolescents.
Advisory takes place each and every day, after third period, for fifteen minutes. Sometimes our students read in advisory. Other times, they take part in team-building activities or contest. And sometimes we watch and discuss a video, a quote, or respond to a question. We have opportunities to talk about how we get organized, manage our time, and set, monitor, and achieve goals. And, whenever possible, we weave the featured character education word throughout our work in advisory. Want to learn more? Have other ideas for what we can do? Please let us know!
And as always, thanks for the important role you play in our school-home partnership.
Please don't hesitate to reach out by phone, email, or appointment, with any feedback or questions you may have about all things middle school!
Sincerely,
Dennis Schug
