Grizzly Gazette: October 2021
News you can use from Dena'ina Elementary School
Principal Post
Dear Dena'ina Families,
As a Title I school, we plan together as a team to ensure a strong home/school connection.
If you'd like to view our Title I Plan, School/Home Compact, Family Engagement Policy or learn more about what we do at school, please visit the About Us section of our website or the Parent Information page under the Home Connection tab at the top of our website.
Parents are the most important factor in a child's success in life! How can you help them at home? Two things: (1) Focus on reading at home, practicing math facts and spelling words and (2) Attendance - be sure your child is at school every day unless they are sick, and if they do miss school talk to the teachers about making up the work they missed. Of course, ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat healthy meals and get enough exercise is also helpful. Another way to help your child(ren) is to take good care of yourself - we often sacrifice our own rest or health when life is busy!
Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday, October 28th from 12:00-7:30 on Zoom or by phone only. Friday, October 29th we will hold morning conferences only (9:00-12:30) and the afternoon will be a Professional Development time for staff. Please read more on conferences below.
As always, should you need anything or have questions please contact me anytime.
Sincerely,
Mr. Lavalier
Quarter 1 Ends October 15th
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28TH and FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29TH
Parent conferences will be via Zoom this fall and we will re-evaluate in February how those will be conducted. Fall conferences are for all students; spring conferences are as needed. Siblings will be scheduled back to back to help parents out. Teachers will send letters home with your conference time in the days leading up. They will email you a Zoom meeting link and enable the 'waiting room'. This way, teachers just let parents in when it’s their time so nobody can accidentally jump in and hear a conference that isn’t for their child.
To accomodate families schedules, we will offer conferences on Thursday October 28th from 12:00-7:30 and Friday October 29th from 9:00-12:30
Teachers will discuss your child's report card and fall testing scores with families during this time. Some teachers may ask your child to lead their conference, so they should also be on the Zoom meeting.
If for some reason Zoom isn't working or you'd rather do a phone conference, please let your child's teacher know.

Yearbooks
We have decided to change to a new yearbook company that fits into our school vision by being responsible and giving back. For every yearbook purchased, a tree will be planted! We will have more student involvement and more opportunity for student work to be featured. It is customizable for our student goals and achievement and will have more pages and pictures. We are excited about this yearbook! If you'd like to order your yearbook, please log into SchoolPay.

Frequently Asked Questions
These 'tickets' are given out by adults when they notice students doing things that fit the character traits taught through our Responsibility Chart. We believe you get more of what you pay attention to, so we strive to focus on the positive behaviors that students exhibit. Every adult, including bus drivers, can give Grizzly tickets. Students write their name on the ticket and each classroom teacher has a system for drawing tickets to reward students in different ways.
