Jag E-News
Week of May 15, 2023
Happy Mother's Day! We are so thankful for all of the moms that are a part of our Jag Community and we hope that you feel especially loved and celebrated today.
We are in the final stretch of the school year and we want to ensure that the next couple of weeks go smoothly for everyone. Please work with your students to make sure they have completed assignments, turned in missing work, and checked for fines. We will begin our end of semester schedule on Monday, May 22nd and students will not be allowed to bring backpacks to school on early release days, May 24th and 25th.
We had a lot to celebrate last week as we wrapped up our 2022-23 athletic seasons with our final soccer games, celebrated students at the Kickstart Belt Ceremony, and hosted our 1st ever SMS Football Combine. Thank you to all of our coaches and athletes that helped make it happen. I am honored to attend the FAB Award Ceremony this Wednesday as we recognize Luke Chapman (8th Grade), Coach Martinez, and Coach Andrews, for their incredible dedication throughout the year.
I also want to say THANK YOU to everyone that helped us celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. A huge thank you to Texan Smile & Family Cosmetic Dentistry for bringing us Travelin' Tom's Coffee Truck. Thank you to our amazing PTO and all of the parent volunteers for hosting our Walking Taco & Pizza Luncheons. Thank you to Cinnaholic (Telfair) for donating 100 cinnamon rolls to be enjoyed by our staff. And thank you to Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union for the sandwiches and snacks.
We are looking forward to seeing many of our Jag Parents on campus this week for our grade-level award ceremonies and field days. Have a great week Jags!
Sincerely,
Cholly Oglesby
Principal

JAGUAR SPOTLIGHT
Meta Engineer for the Week
Three Sartartia Middle School Computer Science students won Meta’s (Facebook) Engineer for the Week challenge. Meta's Engineer for the Week program introduces learners to the power of STEM and provides a pathway for them to make an impact in their communities.
Leila Youssef, Riho Kobayashi and Rebecca George designed "The Portable Classroom" to make education more accessible to children in difficult situations. It includes text-to-speech, solar power, interactive puzzles and translation to multiple languages through Google APIs. Their product was selected out of hundreds of submissions and they received $1,000 to donate to a local non-profit organization of their choice, Attack Poverty.

In the Joy of Others
eCyberMission
Congratulations to The 3 Muskarats & Cheese: Iris Li, Vivian Sun, Elaine Wu, and Ella Yan. The girls place 2nd in the state last in the eCybermission competition sponsored by the U.S. Army and the National Science Teaching Association. Each team member will receive a $500 savings bond prize. Way to go Jags!
The girls proposed a design of a robotic trash collection system powered by solar and wind. The design was inspired during girls' beach vacation and for the purpose to reduce trash left on the beach by humans or washed ashore by waves. The system consists of a fleet of automated robots that can navigate the beach terrain, detect and classify trash items, and pick them up using a robotic arm. The robots can also communicate with each other and coordinate their actions to optimize their efficiency and coverage. The collected trash is then transported to a central station where it is sorted and recycled or disposed of properly. The system aims to reduce the amount of plastic pollution entering the ocean, as well as to improve the aesthetic and sanitary conditions of the beach
FilmFest
Congratulations to 8th grader, Penelope Strohl!
She competed in the Middle School 48-Hour Film and placed 3rd in the district at this year's Film Fest. Way to go! We are so proud of her accomplishment! Thank you for representing SMS!
