SMS TEACHERS WIN STEM GRANT FROM THE CITADEL

On Friday, 8th grade teachers, Mrs. Ballard (ELA) and Mrs. Tant (Math/Math 1) were notified that they were recipients of a $20,000 grant from The Citadel.

They have completed a multi-summer program through the STEM Center of Excellence at The Citadel which focused on Infusing Computing onto their curriculum.

Through their work with this program they were eligible to apply for a grant to provide training to SMS classroom teachers at Stanley Middle on what computational thinking is and how to implement computational thinking into their instruction. The implementation of computational thinking into instruction, and allowing students to use the process for themselves, is also one of the components of the NC STEM School of Distinction Rubric.

CAN FOOD DRIVE

We are excited that we will once again collect cans and non-perishable food for the Stanley Community Food Bank. This year, we will collect as grade levels with the winning grade level (most cans collected per grade level) being treated on Friday, December 17.

The can food drive will be held from December 1 - December 15 at dismissal.

Test to Stay

On Friday, November 5, SMS became one of the 8 school sites in Gaston County Schools to open as a Test to Stay location. Test to Stay is completely optional and requires parental consent to participate.

Any GCS staff member or student, who is a contact to a positive COVID-19 case at school, and has no symptoms is eligible to participate in Test to Stay. Test to Stay allows exposed students who stay symptom free and continually test negative on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 to remain in school for the instructional day only , instead of an at home quarantine.

If students are a contact, Nurse Martin will explain the details of the Test to Stay procedures and drive-up/parking logistics to parents when she calls for notification. She will also continue to remind parents of all options available regarding an exposure at school.

Parents and students will remain in their car for the entire testing process.

Students who are vaccinated with no symptoms will continue with the current procedures in place.

North Carolina STEM SCHOOL DESIGNATION

We are in the midst of a multi-year process of applying for and earning recognition as a North Carolina STEM School of Distinction. One part of that is to connect with various businesses men and women who are in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) field.

Additionally, we would like to make connections with parents who represent many careers. We are asking that our parents please complete the Google Form to help us build our Stanley STEM Network.

Thank you to those who have already completed the form. If you use STEM skills in anyway in your profession, we need you in one of many ways!
