Spring 2018 MAP Scores
Cocoa and Caroling - December 6th
This year we are going to follow the same format we used last year (and for Spring Concerts) to stagger performances. Each grade will have a few carols they will learn to share with the audience. They will perform on the stage.
Preschool Students will perform at 5:45 pm
Grade K-1 will begin performing at 6:00 pm.
Grade 2-3 will begin performing at 6:30 pm
Grade 4-5 will begin performing at 7:00 pm.
We will have cocoa for families to enjoy following each caroling performance in the cafeteria. Santa will also be available in the library for students to visit with following each performance.
We hope you are able to join us for this fun evening!
Student Council News
Student Council met on November 28th during lunch. At the meeting we decided to purchase a software program called YouUpLift and a smart TV for the cafeteria. With this program students will be able to submit positive text or pictures of other students, that will be displayed on the TV. The hope is that this will bring a more positive vibe to students and promote kindness and respect.
The members also met before school 2 days to put together a presentation on respect. They will be visiting classrooms and presenting it to classes in hopes to teach what respect is and what it looks like.
Student Council is hoping to be able to host the Holiday Shoppe again this year for students to purchase gifts for the holidays. We have asked for parent volunteers to run the shoppe during school hours and hope to get volunteers so we can have it.
Change the World Wednesdays -
This month for Change the World we raised around $115 that will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Once a month our student council will be collecting donations to help change the world! The donations will be shared with different charities that benefit our students and their families. On the specified days students may make a donation and wear a hat. Teachers may make a donation and wear jeans. Our next "Change the World Wednesday" will be:
- December 19- All in for Hydro - Funds will be donated for Hydrocephalus Research
Student council is encouraging all classrooms to help spread cheer this season by decorating classroom doors for the holidays. We will also have a Spirit Week the last week of the semester.
Monday, December 17 - Ugly Holiday Sweater (or t-shirt) day with holiday socks
Tuesday, December 18 - Dress like a snowman
Wednesday, December 19 - Dress for the North Pole - as Santa, a reindeer or an elf
Thursday, December 20 - Pajama Day (school appropriate winter pj's)

Practicing Math Facts
Why Should Children Learn Math Facts?
There are several valuable reasons for students to learn their math facts. Below are two reasons from Parent-Homework:
Math Facts are important because they form the building blocks for higher-level Math concepts. Skills such as adding and subtracting larger numbers, telling time, counting money, measurement, long multiplication and division are just a few of the concepts that a child will encounter fairly early in her Math career. If she has mastered her Math Facts, these concepts will be significantly easier and she will be better equipped to solve them more quickly. If she is spending a lot of time doing the basic Facts, she is more likely to be confused with the process and get lost in her calculations.
By learning her Math Facts, your child will also develop a keen number sense. This means that she will better understand the relationship between numbers. For example, it is important for your child to see that 6-2=4 because 2+4=6. She should also develop an understanding of how far numbers are away from the nearest tens, which will aid in such skills as estimating and rounding.
Resources for Practicing Math Facts at Home
You can use playing cards to make learning facts fun. The picture below shows addition, but you could easily adapt this to subtraction, multiplication, or division.

Handbook and Social Media Forms
We also must have your signed permission before we are allowed to include your student's picture in any posts on social media pertaining to MCE. We love to celebrate the learning happening at MCE, and we do this by sharing pictures.
Please return the signed permission form to your child's teacher as soon as possible, if you have not done so.
Help us ensure your child's safety at the end of the day!
If you need to make a change to your child’s normal routine you must send a note with your child in the morning. If it is an emergency, you must call and speak to a secretary before 2pm. Do not leave a message on the school answering service. The answering service is to report absences only, and it is not checked throughout the day.
We will not make any changes after 2pm. Our goal is to get every student safely to their correct destination at the end of each day. We need your help to make sure this happens.
You must opt in to receive text messages from School Messenger
