Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
Now, that we have had opportunities to refocus, relax, and reenergize; it is time for us to bring closure to what has the potential to be our most amazing year during my tenure. I thank you for all that you have done and are about to do for our children.
Our children come to us each day with an expectation that they will learn something new or refine and deepen something they already know. They further expect that we will know how to respond to someone who comes seeking knowledge. As I sat in Sunday service, I heard the Pastor tell us how to respond to people seeking Jesus. I immediately was able to apply the three lessons to our work as it relates to our students who come seeking knowledge. For us to continue to provide a quality education we must do three things:
Pay attention to our students. See them! What are their needs? Where are they strong? Where do they need to be strengthened? How are they responding to instruction? Do we see emotional or physical needs that can be addressed through our extended services?
Pay attention to ourselves. Now, this can be two-fold. Let’s look at the first way...we must take care of ourselves. There is little we can do for our students, if we are in need. Check on each other and provide uplift. Secondly, we need to check our own behaviors that center around our work. How do we enter the workplace? Do we greet our day with excitement or disdain? How do we receive our students? Are we genuinely happy to see them? Do we see the “oak” in them or only the “seed”? Do we offer rigor, or do we make it easy for them?
Pay attention to their requests. This can be a challenge because children do not always know how to ask for help. Sometimes a cry for help is made manifest in misbehavior, anger, fear, etc. But, then there are those who raise their hands because they feel safe in our learning environment. They ask questions and give input into their education. Let’s take Tristan, PCHS senior, who spoke to me at the Pass Parade regarding the rigor he is facing in Mrs. Battles’ science class. He loves it - though challenging! He said every student, in preparation for life after high school, should experience this level of push and support. (Thank you, Mrs. Battles for living the beliefs.) He’s not the only one...our students repeatedly ask to be challenged. In fact, it has happened so often at so many levels that it is a student demand. How awesome!
What will be our response? I see the oak in all of us. We can do and be anything type of district we set our course to be. All we need do is continue to trust each other and the process. We are one team on one mission: empower students to be college-career ready, critical thinkers, and contributing citizens. We are quickly coming into port for this year. Finish Strong!! With that, I submit the Captain’s Log! #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot #finishstrong cje
