Notes from Your UC Merced Library Liaison
Happy Spring
I hope you were able to do something relaxing during your time away from campus over Spring Break.
This update contains information about some new library resources, a newly-developed Elsevier FAQ webpage, and several library-sponsored events, including the film screening of Adiós Amor; a reception honoring history student Sarah Lee, one of the winners of the Abrescy-Kranich Library Award; and the Living Library.
As always, you can reach me by emailing ldavis23@ucmerced.edu or calling 209.285.7742.
New & Coming Library Resources
The UC Merced Library has acquired The Making of the Modern World (Gale).
Useful for history, economics, gender studies, labor studies, and the study of slavery and colonization, this database documents the dynamics of Western trade and wealth from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century. It is available for use now.
The California Digital Library (CDL) has acquired the following Gale resources for all UC campuses:
- Archives of Sexuality and Gender, Parts 1-3
- Sabin Americana, 1500-1926
- The Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer History
CDL will announce when access is available to these resources.
UC is also providing financial support for the following open access projects:
- Directory of Open Access Journals (operational support)
- Libraria, a SPARC-affiliated project to make subscription anthropology & archaeology journals open access
- Diversity and Dissent, a project of Reveal Digital
- Media History Digital Library (to digitize public domain issues of TV Guide)
- The Public Domain Song Anthology
Access details for the last four resources will be announced by CDL.
Elsevier Update
In March, the campus community received several letters regarding UC's decision to break with Elsevier. The UC Merced Library has developed a UC-Elsevier Negotiations webpage to help answer any additional questions.

Abrescy-Kranich Library Award Reception
Established in 2017, the Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence recognizes undergraduate students who demonstrate an understanding of the research process and effective use of library and information resources and services. In addition to submitting a research paper or project completed for a credit-bearing course within the last 12 months, students must also write a reflective essay about their research experience and growth.
This year, one of the winners is history student Sarah Lee. Ms. Lee will be receiving a $500 scholarship, and her History 133 paper, "They Called it a Boom: Nation Building in Coronado, California in 1888", has been deposited in eScholarship.
Please join us in celebrating the achievement of both Ms. Lee and Ms. Marisela Padilla Alcala, biological sciences major, at the reception. Light refreshments will be served.

2nd Annual UC Merced Living Library
UC Merced campus community members are invited to participate in the Living Library, a free, interactive event, open to all students, staff, and faculty.
A Living Library is a library of people available to be "checked out" for a 20-minute conversation. During this event, volunteers will be available to be “checked out” by a member of the UC Merced community. The Living Library provides an opportunity to have authentic conversations, form deeper understandings of one another, and build connections across campus.
Tuesday, April 9
12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
KL 355
Please contact Elizabeth Salmon, Research Services Librarian, at esalmon@ucmerced.edu, with any questions or to volunteer to share your unique story at this event. Elizabeth is still seeking staff, faculty, and graduate students to volunteer as "books."
