WARRIORS IN 'THE KNOW'

“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.”
~ Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl
Moment of Reflection
After dropping my daughter off at school this morning, I took the little bit longer route, but with fewer turns, to my office. In doing so, I got to see Truck #1 parked outside the downtown Bonham Fire Station with its ladder extended and waving the U.S. Flag.
I really just wanted to get out of my car, stare for just a bit and take it all in; the image created a lump in my throat and a deep sense of pride all at the same time. In all the chaos of COVID lately, I had let this tragic day slip to the back of my memory.
However, as I drove by the events of that day came flooding back to me - I was teaching 8th grade reading at L.H. Rather Junior High in the room Mrs. Burpo currently occupies. Next door (Mrs. Williams' current room) was the teacher's lounge that contained a big screen TV that was connected to cable television. I remember standing in my classroom door watching the TV through the door in the next room. That is where I watched the second plane fly into the World Trade Center building. I remember there being a lot of conversation that day versus 'finding the main idea'. The students were confused and had lots of questions that we all tried to guide them through......while not having much knowledge about what was happening ourselves.
This reminded me - that is what teachers do; we find those teachable moments and trudge on. No college class had prepared any of us how to teach through a tragedy unfolding before our eyes.....but we did and you are continuing to today. We are living in very similar times - I think; people are uneasy, nervous, uncertain. Each of you are teaching and working with kids each and every day through a pandemic that didn't give us a guidebook beforehand! Yet you continue to trudge on because that is what the students need us to do - they need to watch, learn and practice how to overcome adversity.
Never forget; don't let others forget and continue doing what you do best!

** COVID QUERY **
- If you or someone you live with is awaiting test results, report to your supervisor and do not come to work or school until results are received. Dependent upon the test results, your supervisor will provide a return date.
- Staff MUST screen for symptoms daily; this includes an onsite temperature check at BISD.
- Staff MUST report 1) symptoms that are not normal for them, 2) if they are test confirmed for COVID-19 and/or 3) if they have had close contact with a test confirmed individual.
- Close contact includes being directly exposed to infectious secretions from a test confirmed individual OR being within 6 feet of a test confirmed individual for a largely uninterrupted or sustained extended contact period of approximately 15 minutes. Additional factors like case/contact masking (both individuals wearing a mask), ventilation, presence of dividers and case symptomatology may affect this determination.
