Visit the Buckingham Art Expo - 4/4!

The Buckingham Elementary Art Expo is being held this Thursday, April 4th, from 6:30PM-8:00PM.

Viewing the exceptional student artwork created by your child allows the observer to see pieces that display a level of skill, developmental maturity, and personal expression. It also allows others to respond, reflect, analyze and discuss what has been created - fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of why one creates in the first place.

We hope you can join us on April 4th!

Operation Helping Hand - April 10, 2013

It’s time for Buckingham's annual United Way's: Operation Helping Hand Food Drive. Operation Helping Hand is vital to the local food pantries, as this is a collection of food at a time when the pantries traditionally are empty. For families using the pantries as a constant source of food, pantries are having a tough time keeping food on their shelves. Also, through this food drive, students learn the importance of participating in a meaningful service project and they become aware of the needs of others in our communities. Please see flyer below for your child's grade-level non-perishable food guides.

Bridge Valley's Race for Autism - 4/20

Are you interested in exercising during a 1 mile fun run/walk or 5k race? The Bucks County 5K series is coming to Bridge Valley Elementary School on April 20th! Since 2008, this 5k race has raised over $100,000 for the Bucks County Autism Support Association. Along with Bridge Valley, Buckingham Elementary is one of 13 CB Schools who host regional Autistic Support classes - we hope to see you there!

Student Showcase

2013 Essay Contest Winners

Each year, Creative Communications, a company dedicated to the celebration of today’s student writers, conducts a nation-wide Essay contest for students in Grades 3-6. Essays must be non-fiction and no longer than 250 words. Students who submit have an opportunity to become a published writer if their essay is chosen. This year, several students in Mrs. Raitt’s class submitted entries to the Creative Communication contest and 9 of her students have been selected for the publication. Please join us in congratulating these young "newly published" writers: Matthew Creighton, Christopher Czerwinski, Cate de Hoogh, Alyse Faerberg, Kevin Fay, Michael Herron, Amanda Quinn, Makayla Romanus, and Michael Scarpitta.

PAGES - Philadelphia Area Girls Exploring Science - Chestnut Hill Campus Conference

On March 23rd, Chestnut Hill College hosted a conference promoting science education for 6th grade girls. Two Buckingham students, Natalie Horansky and Lily Tibaldi, were nominated by their teacher to attend the day's worth of science activities and experiments with other girls from the Philadelphia Area. Some of their favorite activities included:

  • Extracting DNA from Strawberries
  • Oxygen Testing
  • Hydrophilic vs. Hydrophobic
  • Ice Cream Experiment using Liquid Nitrogen

The goal of the workshop was to increase girls’ interest in science and mathematics, provide students an opportunity to meet women working in non-traditional fields, and foster an awareness of varied career opportunities for women.

School Happenings

Spring Book Fair - Story Laboratory

The students had a wonderful time throughout our Scholastic Spring Book Fair during the week of March 18-22! Every classroom was able to meet our host, the Story Laboratory "Children's-Book" Scientist - Mrs. Diodati - and then visited the book-filled displays. The children were able to browse, see the "Principal's Picks", and find a new favorite story that peaked their interests! Thanks to The PTO, Mrs. Tinari and Mrs. Gidwani for organizing this wonderful event - and most importantly - supporting the love of books with our students!

Chuck-E-Cheese Visits Buckingham

Chuck-E-Cheese visited Buckingham on March 21st to remind children about the exciting PTO Event at the Warrington location. Families were invited to enjoy the fun and activities during the half-day on 3/22. A portion of the proceeds were donated to the Buckingham PTO. Thanks to everyone who particiated in this fun event!

Buckingham Students Make a Difference in Africa!

Over the last several summers, Buckingham 5th Grade Teacher - Miss Courtney Wood, has been able to make a big difference in helping children and families in various villages throughout Africa. She and others involved with the the VIDA Organization have helped build schools, provided solar-powered energy lighting, and cultivated ground into farmland - all with the goal of providing children a better opportunity for an education.

Through our annual Service-Learning Project, Buckingham Elementary has been fortunate to hold a Walk-A-Thon connecting our school's students to those children 5, 000 miles away in Africa. To see how our (the Buckingham students, teachers, and families) collective efforts positively influenced this cause, please watch this inspiring video of Miss Wood's time in Ghana! Pasword - Africa

This year, Buckingham will again support another Walk-A-Thon on Friday, May 3rd, 2013. This summer, 100% of the donations will support a school project in Liberia, Africa. The project will consist of the construction of a new school building for primary students. In addition to building the school structure, a solar-power system will be installed that will allow women to learn how to read and write in the evenings.

Be sure to look for more information sent in last week's Buckingham Thursday Folder.
