Be Respectful ~ Be Responsible ~ Be Resilient
Volume 2 ~ Issue 23 ~ January 29, 2024
“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” ~Kurt Vonnegut~
Falcon community, I have been thinking a lot about the word "community" and what that means. At the end of the week, I debried with my two assistant principals to discuss glows and grows for our HTM community. As I listened, I realized that we need to constantly talk about the importance of having a healthy and safe community. While many students may have found community here, there are others who are struggling to be in community or they are part of a community that is not enhancing their characters. One thing I noticed, recently, are students who hide their faces even when they greet me or any other person. I stopped a group of students and asked them why they do that. They told me that people make fun of their faces, noses and such, so that is why they do it. I see it in their request for their faces to be hidden in pictures. While our children are hanging around other students, they are still isolated and lonely. Furthermore, the use of social media has aggravated this issue. Our mission statement promises that we, along with the larger HTM community, inspire, guide and empower students to thrive in a healthy that fosters a love of learning. Students, what does your immediate community look like? Who are you hanging around with? Do they help you become a better person or do they encourage to do things that bring you down? The answer to those questions will determine what you decide to do with that community? There is a Spanish saying, "Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who your are." You have the ability to make our HTM community a place where EVERYONE belongs. It begins with assessing who you surround yourselves with, whether you speak up for the defenseless, whether you decide to join in bullying someone or determing what you say about a person, face-to-face or on social media. All of these actions either build up our community or they tear it down. You choose. Parents, please have a conversation about community with your children.
