Landslides

The Real Superheros

How are Landslides Formed?

Landslides is commonly known as the mass movement of rock, debris and soil in a downward movement. It usually occurs due to the failure of soil and rock materials in the land. It can also be caused by earthquakes, heavy rainfall and by human activity as well.

Are landslides common in Canada?

Landslides can be found anywhere but most likely on the slope of a hill. In Canada there have been many small landslides but only a few very large landslides. A huge landslide took place in British Columbia near a mine in 1917 which killed over 50 people! We also see another major landslide in Saint. Jean Vianney, Quebec in 1971 where 32 people have died.

The most dangerous landslides are found in mountainous regions such as British Columbia, Alberta and in the St. Lawrence Lowlands of Quebec and Ontario. Experts say to avoid roads with very large slopes, be aware of landslide hazard sign on roads and to be sure if on a slope to have side barriers.
