The Real Superheros
Are landslides common in Canada?
The most dangerous landslides are found in mountainous regions such as British Columbia, Alberta and in the St. Lawrence Lowlands of Quebec and Ontario. Experts say to avoid roads with very large slopes, be aware of landslide hazard sign on roads and to be sure if on a slope to have side barriers.
A Seismologist is a geophysicist who studies earthquakes and other activity that occurs beneath the Earth's surface. They monitor this activity using a seismograph and try to predict where and when earthquakes and landslides will take place.
These geologists are involved in reducing/minimzing landslides. They help when creating homes in areas, they think about the soil formation of the foundation of the home and they also use strong materials to make the house stable such as using metal beams in soft soil formation rather than wooden beams.
Geotechnical engineers help prepare communities from landslides by assisting engineers, planners, and building inspectors to create homes, schools, and buildings in landslide free areas. Geotechnical engineers do this by using geological mapping in the area to see slope hazards and determining occurence of landslides.
