SHADOWS EVERYWHERE!
As part of a speech and language lesson, students in Mrs. Filerino and Mrs. Gartland’s classes explored the world of shadows in honor of Groundhog Day with Mrs. Paradiso.
Students identified, discussed, and interacted with shadows of various objects that were projected on the wall. Students also had an opportunity to make their own shadows move.
What's new in Pre-K???
The Preschool classes at Shaler Academy are working on special Valentines for their parents and friends as we discuss people in our lives whom we LOVE. The classes have come together to hear stories about friendship, share a snack, and work with a partner on a Valentine Activity. For President's Day, the classes are learning about the role of our President as a leader and some of our former presidents including "Honest Abe Lincoln" and George Washington. February is also Dental Health Month and the preschool classes are learning about taking care of our teeth. We have invited Mrs. Long, our school nurse, into our classrooms to review proper brushing technique and to learn about going to the dentist. Preschool is a great time to start learning about taking care of our own bodies!
DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month in order to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
Visit http://www.ada.org/en/public-programs/national-childrens-dental-health-month for more information.
Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists to help eliminate tooth decay in children:
Encourage children to eat regular nutritious meals and avoid sugary snacks.
Protect your child’s teeth with fluoride. Use fluoride toothpaste. If your child is less than 7 years old, put only a pea-sized amount on their toothbrush.
Talk to your child’s dentist about dental sealants. Sealants are plastic coatings "painted" over the chewing surface of permanent molars to help prevent decay from occurring in the grooves, where toothbrush bristles cannot reach.
Teach your children the proper brushing techniques. Most children will be able to brush their own teeth by age 6 or 7. Select a brush that has soft, rounded bristles. Show them how to use circular brush strokes to reach all surfaces of teeth, and make sure they spit out the toothpaste and rinse with water after brushing to avoid swallowing any toothpaste.
Don't forget the floss! As soon as any two teeth touch, make sure that you use floss to clean between your child's teeth. This is the only way to avoid decay in places where a toothbrush can't reach.
And most important, visit your dentist twice a year. It is important for your child to have a good attitude toward dental visits. Be positive and remind your child that the dentist is a friendly doctor who is helping to take care of his or her teeth. Set a good example yourself by brushing and flossing twice a day and visiting your dentist regularly.

Kindergarten Happenings...
The Kindergarten classes have been having lots of fun getting ready for the 100th day of school. They had fun making and sharing family projects with their friends at school. The children created group projects in the classroom, read stories, practiced counting by ones, fives and tens. Our gym teacher, Keith MacDougall, even incorporated some movement songs in gym classes where the children moved to the beat of 100 day songs! The Kindergarten classes made 100 day t-shirts and wore them at our ice cream party on February 10th. We are 100 days smarter!
Our book buddy program is under way and children in Mrs. Pagano's class are reading books to their Pre-K buddies in Mrs. D'Amore's class every Thursday. The children have formed friendships. Kindergarteners practice their reading strategies, and the PreK children get to learn a little bit about what they will learn in kindergarten in September. The children enjoyed creating their own bookmarks with their buddy. Mrs. Brennan and Mrs. Kim's bilingual kindergarten classes are also reading books to each other. Happy reading to all!
CARING & SHARING FOR ST. JUDE
The Music and Art classes at Shaler worked together in a joint Caring and Sharing Project. Our theme was showing how a kind word or gesture can brighten someone's day. The children went through 3 centers including language arts, music and art. The culminating activity was creating valentine cards which were sent to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. All of the children will be making a difference in another child's life. We are hopeful that this collaborative project will impact, enhance and enrich the lives of your children today, and in the future to come.
