Genetically Modified Organism
Niko Droukas
What is a GMF/GMO?
This is a genetically modified food or organism. It is a food produced from organisms that have had their genes modified. These genes may come from many different things such as bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. They are used a lot today in the foods we eat.
Benifits
- Fruits are fresher and stay good a longer time
- Resistant to insects
- More food to be grown in more places using fewer natural resources
- There is more nutrients in GMF than non GMF's
- Many farmers use them for food
Risks
- Can cause allergic reactions
- Can make bacteria a lot stronger and harder to kill
- Create deadly health issues
- GMOs could also be toxic to its environment. GMOs that contain pesticides can pollute that substance into nearby bodies of water causing damage to fish and aquatic life.
- They may also affect the animals around it causing disruption in the food chain.
Why we should or shouldn't label GMF?
My opinion is to label them. These things are very dangerous not just to us people but to everything around us. Despite what people say about how fresh they are, I want them to be labeled for the safety of humans and our animals. Many people have these allergic reactions from these foods because they are not labeled. Fish have a good risk of being infected by toxins due to the GMO's. Overall I want GMO's labeled.
