What is the International Space Station?

  • The International Space Station is a big science lab where Astronauts/Cosmonauts work, eat and sleep.

  • The construction of the International Space Station began on November 20th, 1998

  • Astronauts have been going up to the ISS since October of 2000

  • There are 16 countries supporting the International Space Station, the main countries are USA, Russia, Canada and Japan

Expeditions

  • There have been a lot of different expeditions on the ISS

  • Expedition 39 is the current mission on the ISS

  • The crew members of Expedition 39 include Rick Mastracchio, Mikhail Tvurin, Koichi Wakata, Alexander Skvortsov, Steve Swanson and Oleg Artemyev

Dimensions of the International Space Station


  • The ISS is larger than a 6 bedroom house
  • The ISS is almost four times as large as the Russian space station Mir and about five times as large as the U.S. Skylab
  • The ISS weighs 925,000 pounds
  • The ISS is as long as a 30 story building is tall
