Ernest Rutherford
(1871-1937)
Gold Foil Experiment
Rutherford shot tiny, minute particles at a thin sheet of gold. A small percentage of the particles were deflected, but most passed through the gold sheet. Rutherford concluded that the mass of an atom is concentrated at the center of the atom.
2 Things That Were Discovered About The Atom
- An atom had more than just empty space and electrons.
- It must contain a positively charged nucleus that contains almost all of its mass.
