LET'S TALK! MRHS's 2nd Shark "THINK" Tank Forum: Rethinking School
Our students, families, staff, administration, and community have worked together over the last three years to set a clear Vision, Mission, Core Values/Beliefs and 21st Century Learning Expectations to guide our goal of moving our school from good to GREAT. We have celebrated many successes together and pride ourselves as being an innovative and forward-thinking district.
On November 2, 2017 over 30 students, MRHS teachers/administrators, parents and community members came together for our 1st ever Shark "Think" Tank conversation. This was an exciting opportunity and the discussion was rich and insightful.
The Topic:
What do you believe about how children learn most powerfully and deeply in their lives?
Here are highlights of the conversation:
- Human Connections - personal, face to face conversations build relationships
- Communication - very important to touch base with parents (more the better)
- Cell Phones:
- time and a place to use them
- need balance
- direct connection to student anxiety
- parents need to help with this- contributing to student use
- some teachers take them away before class- students at meeting report "this helps"
- our policy moving forward?
- Critical Thinking
- students want teachers to ask questions they can't look up answer to on google
- no more memorization!
- delve deep into topics and not rush to cover them
- clear expectations- and high expectations
- How do we push critical thinking?
- connect previously learned skills and have students apply them to new challenges and figure it ou
- not rely on text books and powerpoints so much
- Having Great Teachers- what are the qualities?
- make personal connections with students- get to know them, ask them how they are doing, know something about them outside the content/topic
- communicate home regularly- update aspen
- flexibility - example: if students have 3 other tests be willing to move test date
- high expectations & get students involved/engaged- less lecture and presentations
- passion!
We'd like to continue the collaborative conversation with ALL of you on March 1st, 2018, at 6 pm (library) in a forum open to ALL students, families, staff and community members. This will be the 2nd in a series of forums to share what we value in our children's education.
Hope to see you in There!
