A Message from Mrs. Booth
Dear Silver Springs Families,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Silver Springs Elementary! It is the belief and mission of everyone here to encourage all our students to Lead, Grow, and Inspire as we work together to unlock a world of opportunities. As the leaders of tomorrow we believe that we have the power to choose to be whatever we want to be!
I can't believe that I am already writing this year's first Eagle Express Newsletter! While starting this school year might look a little different than it has in the past, one thing that I know for sure is that we are SO excited to see our students and families again!
We know you have many questions about the start of the school year. This newsletter will answer some of those questions, and classroom teachers will be sending additional communication home to families with pertinent information to begin the school year.
Often when we experience something new or different, we get a feeling of butterflies in our stomach. If we think about that feeling as excitement rather than nervousness, it paints an entirely different picture. Our kids may be feeling some of those butterflies as we begin to talk about starting another school year virtually and in-person. Validating those butterflies and naming that feeling might help them as we prepare for the return to school.
Thank you for your continued patience and grace as we embark on our newest journey together. We are looking forward to kicking off our school year virtually on Tuesday, September 8th! On behalf of the staff of Silver Springs Elementary, welcome to the 2020-21 school year! We are looking forward to the energy that students bring each and every day!
"Eagles Strong"
Katie Booth

Annual Online Registration
All new and returning families: It's time to fill out your required online Annual Registration!
Every year, all families are required to fill out the digital Annual Registration for each student. Families may complete these forms through ParentConnection. Through this process you will be asked to update your student’s emergency contact information, home address and health information, review our technology use policy and student handbooks, learn more about PTSA/PTA, access the web store and much more. Need Help? Many of the most commonly asked questions can be found on our FAQs page (located in the upper right hand corner of ParentConnection.) If you have further questions, please email the helpdesk at parentportal@northvilleschools.org. All elementary students must have the Annual Registration completed prior to the start of school on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

Class Placements
We know how excited everyone is for the start of the school year and to find out who your teachers will be! We can't thank you enough for your patience as we are working to finalize class placements and teacher assignments.
If you selected in-person instruction for your child, students will be assigned a classroom teacher in Mi-Star. While classroom teachers may have more than 15-20 students on their class list, when students return in-person they will be placed into cohorts of 15-20 students. Therefore, your student may have students from another class assigned to their cohort. Teachers will communicate what classroom each student will report to when we return to in-person school.

Protocols for In-Person Return
For those who selected in-person instruction after our virtual start, we are in the process of
putting together a video that will highlight all you need to know about a safe return to Silver Springs. We plan to have the video ready to go by mid-September. Be on the lookout!

FAQs
1. What school supplies do I need to buy for my child?
For the September virtual start, your child will need a device, paper, and pencils. Please see the K-5 Suggested Supply List for a list of optional school supplies requested by teachers for students to support their learning during the 2020-2021 school year. For those students returning to in-person learning after the virtual start, please note that NONE of our supplies will be shared this year.
2. How will I get the textbooks, workbooks, and other resources my child needs?
We will be hosting a "drive-by supply pick-up" the first week of school. This will be your chance to get all of the instructional materials your child will need. (Please note that your child will not have these materials for the first day of school, nor will he/she need them!) More information is forthcoming.
3. What will the virtual schedule look like?
This will be largely dependent on how the virtual teacher plans to structure his/her day, but plan on the virtual day looking like the regular school day in terms of length of time. (Your child will not be in front of a screen all day, but he/she will likely have independent work to do when he/she is not receiving synchronous instruction.)
4. When will we receive our teaching assignment?
These will be available in MiStar Parent Connection at 4pm on Wednesday, 9/2.

NORTHVILLE YOUTH NETWORK TO PROVIDE YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING TO ADULTS
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an international program designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers and other school personnel, coaches, youth group leaders, neighbors, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. Northville Youth Network is providing FREE training to adults who work with, coach, teach, minister, parent or care about Northville youth in a blended online format in September.
