News and Notes for January

South Grove Intermediate School

From Mrs. Reid

Happy New Year South Grove Families! This school year has started out wonderfully and we know it will finish on a fabulous note, however, we have miles to go. January and February will find teachers and students working to increase academic achievement. One way students are going to learn and grow academically is to be at school every day. Make it a New Year goal for your student to strive for perfect attendance second semester. Get them to school on time and every day. We will do the rest!

Please continue to check Parent Connect to access your student's weekly grades. If you have any questions or concerns about his/her progress, please contact your child's teacher. They will help you help your student!

The South Grove staff is here to challenge each student to grow academically and socially. If we can assist you in any way, please contact us.

Snow Make Up Days - Pending School Board Approval

No doubt your kids were super excited to have an extra week off of school! We hope you survived the storm and enjoyed the days snugged by a fire and sipping hot chocolate. Two of the days have been excused by the Indiana Department of Education and three will need to be added into the school year.

Proposed Dates

Monday, February 17 - Presidents' Day

Friday, May 16 - Built in Snow Day

Monday, June 2 - Added to the school calendar

Mission Statement

The mission of South Grove Intermediate School is to create a culture of excellence that prepares our students to be ready to learn, responsible for themselves, and respectful of others as we work together to create productive citizens.

Daily Student Mission

Today at South Grove I choose to be

ready to learn

responsible for myself and my property

and respectful of others

I will make today a great day

for my classmates, my teachers, and myself.

Library Temporarily Closed - What can I read?

South Grove's heating and cooling units are being updated while school is in session and this is going to drastically improve the learning environment for teachers and students. During the renovations we will do our best to accommodate student needs and we know it is important to all our students that they are able to read and continue checking out books to meet or exceed their individual AR goals.

Where do I get books?

  • Mrs. McKinney will be setting up a temporary library station outside the library and will do her best to provide a variety of books for students to check out during the renovation.
  • The Beech Grove Library has a wonderful selection of books. Students can go online to verify that books are in the AR (Accelerated Reader) program and fit in their reading level.
  • Mrs. Collinsworth will be adding the Kindle App and Nook App to the student tablets. Parents will be responsible for sharing the log in and passwords for students to use these programs.

How long will the library be closed?

The library's HVAC unit is scheduled to be replaced January 16 - January 27.

What if I have questions about this project?

Please email Mrs. Reid directly if you have questions about the renovation plans. We are very anxious to have these improvements made to our school!

Thank you for completing the South Grove Newsletter Survey

We were pleased to have 110 people take the survey. The majority of the feedback was from the students who have requested more pictures and articles about student activities. We will do our best to add some of your requests over the next few months. Feel free to email Mrs. Collinsworth if you have any suggestions or article ideas.

Girls on the Run

Service Project

The Girls on the Run would like to thank the staff and students for supporting our Pals for Paws puppy chow fundraiser. We were able to provide a $500 donation to this amazing organization.

Jingle Bell 5K

Ten young ladies braved the cold weather and participated in the Arthritis Foundation's Annual Jingle Bell 5K. The coaches were extremely proud of these runners. We will make an announcement at school in February regarding our plans for a spring running club.

Box Tops for Education

The South Grove Intermediate Box Top Contest was a huge success! Please continue to save your Box Tops. We will be having two more contests this year. Also, keep in mind that we accept Campbells Soup labels and pop tabs. Thank you for your participation.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Please consider dropping off aluminum cans and paper products to the South Grove recycle bins. By doing this you are helping to financially support our physical education program. Mrs. Newman appreciates the help as she educates students on not only living a healthy life but making healthy choices for our planet.
