Observational Learning - is learning by watching and imitating others
· The process of observing and imitating a specific behavior is called modeling
· Imitation is more pronounced in humans
· Our ideas, fashions, and habits travel by imitation
· Imitation shapes behavior from a young age. What children see, children do!
The ToonDoo below is a great illustration of Observational Learning
Did you know?
Transmitted cultural elements are called memes (not the Internet kind, although those can serve as examples)
· Neuroscientists have discovered mirror neurons in the frontal lobe, next to the motor cortex)
· These neurons fire when a task is performed, but also performed when observing someone else doing them
· Mirror neurons also are responsible for helping children learn empathy and in judging other’s mental states.
