Principal Perspective

What an exciting first week back we have had! We are building community, sharing about our summers and reading, reading, reading.

On Monday and Tuesday (and, Friday for kindergartners) we spent time going over our common expectations as a school. We reviewed the rules of wall ball, what we expect in the lunchroom and how to use our new water bottle fill stations. We are off to a great start and look forward to a year full of learning.

Next week is a busy week, as we have no school on Monday, our first Early Release on Wednesday, Back to School Night on Thursday and Grandparent's Day on Friday. We look forward to hosting our parents on Thursday and Grandparents on Friday. We look forward to seeing our parents and grandparents at the end of next week.

Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Directory and Photo/Video Release

Each year parents who do not wish their child's directory information (address, phone number, email address) to be published must notify our office in writing. The deadline for this notification is Friday, September 7.

Parents who do not wish their child's photo/video to be released must complete the Use of Photo/Video of Students Opt Out Form. This form remains on record from year to year.

Details on photo and directory release can be found here.

Ridgewood Spirit Wear Sale

The online store is now open to purchase your Ridgewood spirit wear. Please visit https://myshirtbin.com/collections/ridgewood-elementary to order. The store will be open through Monday, September 10th. Items will be delivered to your student's classroom during the last week of September. Please be sure to include your student's grade and teacher name in the online order.

Also- Do you have Ridgewood apparel you no longer need? Items can be donated to the Clothes Closet collection bin, usually located in the front hallway, to help families in need. Your school community thanks you!

Enrollment Verification

You likely have received notices asking you to verify your child's enrollment information. We ask this of parents each year (even those who have just enrolled) so that we can capture any changes that may have occurred over the last year. For most of you, this is a quick check that the demographic information we have is correct. Please take a few minutes to complete this before school begins. Please note that the verification must be done on a computer - it won't work correctly on a phone or iPad.

If you have trouble accessing your account, please call our main office (503-356-2440) and Marla or Dede can help you! Details can also be found at this website.

Big picture

Regular Attendance Is Important

When it comes to attendance, every day matters. According to the Oregon Department of Education, more than one in six students in chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism means a student misses 10% or more school days. That’s about two days per month.

Regular attendance will help children do well in elementary school, secondary school, college and at work. According to the Attendance Works Organization, by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

Attendance habits are set the very first week of the school year, so please start building good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session. We will be sharing more helpful tips and information throughout the school year.

Medication Information

If your child needs to take medication while at school, district policy requires the medication to be stored in the school health room and dispensed by trained school personnel. Students may not carry or self-administer any medication, including both over-the-counter and prescribed medications. If you will be bringing in medication for your child, please complete the Medication Authorization form and bring it to the office with the medication. Paper forms are also available in the office.
