Principal Perspective
What an exciting first week back we have had! We are building community, sharing about our summers and reading, reading, reading.
On Monday and Tuesday (and, Friday for kindergartners) we spent time going over our common expectations as a school. We reviewed the rules of wall ball, what we expect in the lunchroom and how to use our new water bottle fill stations. We are off to a great start and look forward to a year full of learning.
Next week is a busy week, as we have no school on Monday, our first Early Release on Wednesday, Back to School Night on Thursday and Grandparent's Day on Friday. We look forward to hosting our parents on Thursday and Grandparents on Friday. We look forward to seeing our parents and grandparents at the end of next week.
Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Grandparents and Grandfriends Day
You’re Invited to Grandparents and Grandfriends Day, on Friday, September 7, 2018
We look forward to hosting our Grandparents and Grandfriends for a day of learning!
Our event starts at 9:30am in the gym. Check in will begin at 9:00 a.m.
Guests should enter the building through the gym doors at the south end of the school (please do not enter through the front office). There will be a table there to check in and receive visitor badges.
Check in will go much faster if grandparents know their grandchildren’s teacher names (please complete below).
Parking at Ridgewood can be difficult. Please plan to carpool or drop off grandparents if possible. You may need to park in the neighborhood and walk to the school.
Please have grandparents bring a sack lunch if they would like to eat with their grandchildren.
The program concludes at the end of student lunches: 11:40 for Kinder, 11:50 for 1st grade, 12:00 for 2nd grade, 12:10 for 3rd, 12:20 for 4th and 12:30 for 5th grade.
Please call the school office at 503-356-2440 with any questions.

Regular Attendance Is Important
When it comes to attendance, every day matters. According to the Oregon Department of Education, more than one in six students in chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism means a student misses 10% or more school days. That’s about two days per month.
Regular attendance will help children do well in elementary school, secondary school, college and at work. According to the Attendance Works Organization, by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
Attendance habits are set the very first week of the school year, so please start building good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session. We will be sharing more helpful tips and information throughout the school year.
