Hive Happenings
Updates for April 2018
Happy April Lonnie B. Families!
We have some BIG news to announce. Firstly, I'm sure you've heard by now that Mr. Adams will be leaving at the end of the year to join North Springs Elementary as their new Principal. We are SO excited for him and know he will treasure the time he spent here at the hive. From a bee to a cricket! Super proud of him. We would also like to welcome Mr. Dan Reyes, current Assistant Principal at Catawba Trail, who will be joining the administration team of Lonnie B next year! Welcome to the hive!
Our ACE Program was recognized as a Magnet School of America DEMONSTRATION school, which is HUGE! It's a National Award, and the demonstration level is the highest achievement a school can receive. Richland Two had 3 of the 5 schools in the NATION to earn this distinction.... and that is PREMIER! We are super proud of Mrs. Dawn Smith, Lead Teacher and all the teachers and students and families in ACE who make it happen. Just for fun, here's a video link to show Mrs. Beaman surprising Mrs. Smith about the announcement. To be even prouder, we had an assembly planned for that morning to give 1,051 toothbrushes for “Operation Feeding the Homeless.” ACE had set a goal of 800, but clearly surpassed that! So, enjoy the moment that Mrs. Smith and all of ACE found out about our special award!

On every half day, Lonnie B. "sharpens the saw" by offering Covey Clubs for all children to choose from! One of our clubs, the Random Acts of Kindness Club, led by our school counselor, Dr. Grant, chose to raise money for St. Jude by hosting a Friday bake sale. Students can purchase a baked good for 50 cents, with a maximum spending of $1.00. To date, our Random Acts of Kindness has raised $956.09! WOW!!! We're almost there! Our goal is only $43.91 away from our $1000 goal! ONE more bake sale on Thursday to push us over our goal! Students can ONLY purchase 1 item for 50 cents. Please, no bills bigger than a dollar! :)
Our 3rd Quarter is over! WOW... this year seems to be flying by! We will send out report cards after Spring Break on Thursday, April 12th. As always, please contact your child's teacher if you have any concerns about your child's progress so far this year. We will continue to reach out as well. We appreciate being on your team to ensure a successful education!
Thanks for all you do!
Meet Mr. Dan Reyes!

STEM:
Do you know students ages 9-19 who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)? You should tell them about the SC 4-H Engineering Challenge! This event, held on Saturday, April 14 at Midlands Technical College airport campus, features 7 different team competitions and 1 individual competition that students from all over South Carolina can participate in. Information about this year’s competitions and registration can be found on the event website: www.scionthemove.org/engineeringchallenge. Email Katie Burch at korishe@clemson.edu with questions.
STEAM:
During April, EdVenture will be celebrating STEAM education as part of Mathematics Education Month, March for Science, and extending Youth Art Month (by the way, come by and see the kids' work across the state in our Imaginarium thanks to our partnership with the SCAEA and the SCEA).
To express our appreciation to the wonderful teachers of science, mathematics, and the arts, EdVenture is extending an invitation to them to bring their families as our guests on Thursday evening, April 19 from 5:00 until 8:00. We plan to share snippets of 2018-19 programs and other STEAM challenges throughout the museum for kids of all ages.
MAP Testing!
Hopefully your child met his/her goal, and if not, ask them why they think that! Did they rush through? That's one of the biggest reasons students feel that they didn't do as well as they could. We take UNTIMED tests, so thank you for reinforcing to take their time!
Good to know.....
