Special Education 101: An Overview of the Essential Components of Special Education and Disability Categories

In this training, paraeducators will learn about the big ideas of IDEA, special education terminology, disability categories, and the IEP process. In addition to an overview, specific tips and strategies will be shared for supporting students with disabilities in both an in-person and virtual learning environment. Building Fact Fluency
It is important in mathematics for students to have efficient and effective methods for solving various types of problems. In addition, we want our learners to be flexible thinkers. In this session, we will explore evidence-based strategies to acquire addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
Maximizing Student Learning: Using Prompting, Reinforcement, Error Correction & Errorless Teaching
Para educators will explore prompting, the prompt hierarchy, review the ABCs of behavior, learn about error correction and errorless teaching, and supporting students with communication needs in the school setting.
Disability Awareness
This session will address the general characteristics of students with disabilities using categories under IDEA and recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Presenters will discuss instructional and positive behavioral strategies that paraeducators can utilize with students across educational environments. This learning experience will enable paraeducators to feel more empowered in supporting the students they serve
Self-care for Paraeducators: A Focus on the Importance of Social & Emotional Well-being
Educators can greatly benefit from learning about and practicing self-care. With increases in job and personal related stress, this training will share practical strategies that educators can put into practice right away. Taking care of yourself is the best gift you can give to yourself and students.

Functions of Behavior
This session is designed for paraeducators to gain a deeper understanding of behavior analytic principles and terminology, discuss functions of behavior, and debrief about common pitfalls when working with students that engage in challenging behaviors. Practical strategies, tips, and basic procedures that participants can use to make favorable modifications in their students’ behavior will be shared throughout the training.
Executive Functions Skills
This training will provide paraeducators with the opportunity to dig deeper into understanding the domains of Executive Function. Presenters will describe the difference between the Thinking and Doing domains and how the domains may exhibit themselves in students. An explicit model of instruction will be shared to stress the importance of modeling, teaching, practicing, and reinforcing executive functioning skills as well as an in-depth look at two real-life examples.
Autism: What You Need to Know
In this training, paraeducators will be given a brief overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder, review potential strengths and challenges associated with ASD, as well as exploring sensory processing challenges. In addition to an overview, specific tips and strategies will be shared for supporting students with social communication, sensory regulation, expectations, routines, and academic tasks. This learning experience will enable paraeducators to feel more empowered in supporting the students they serve with ASD.
Intelligent Lives Movie Review & Discussion
From award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib comes INTELLIGENT LIVES, a catalyst to transform the label of intellectual disability from a life sentence of isolation to a life of possibility for the most systematically segregated people in America. This session will include a screening of the film and a facilitated discussion of what it means to be intelligent. Join us as we view this amazing film and participate an a virtual discussion of essential take-aways to improve professional practice and expertise in supporting children and youth with disabilities to live their best life.
