Here is your October North Star News!

North Star Elementary Friends and Families,

Thanks to everyone that was able to make it to our Open House Friday. It was great to have the school full of friends and families for the first time in years! I'm excited to share that this will be the first of many gatherings at North Star this school year.

This month our instructional focus will shift from gathering student data to using that data to drive instruction. Now that we have concluded Fast Bridge testing school wide, will be diving deeper into addressing student learning needs by providing focused interventions utilizing both push-in and pull-out models. As a teacher, I always loved the month of October because classroom structures and procedures were in place, running smoothly, and it was time to start diving into the fun of learning!

10/5 - 3rd Grade Class trip to USCG Base and Kodiak Police Station

10/7 - Free Lunch Grace Period Ends

10/10/22 and 10/11/22 - KIDSD Teacher/Staff Inservice (no school for students)

10/28 - Kinder and 1st grade - Joint Classroom Fall Activity Day

10/29 - Family Activity Night - Fall Carnival! (Details TBA)

10/31 - Halloween/Costume Day

10/31 - 11/4 - Red Ribbon Week (Spirit Days TBA)

11/16 - First "read by" cut-off date for Battle of the Books (first 5 books!)

Ms. Victoria is passing out library cards and starting her weekly lessons in the library.

Students can request permission slips to participate from Ms. Victoria in the library.

Potential Battlers - be sure to have your first 5 books read by November 16th.

Dear families,

Our Kodiak community has seen a drastic increase in opioid overdoses this Fall. Talk to your families about the dangers of opioids, and especially fentanyl. KIBSD encourages parents to proactively talk to your children about safe and unsafe substances and what to do if medication or drug paraphernalia is ever found in a public place. Update your first aid kit by adding naloxone (to reverse an overdose). This is especially important with Halloween quickly approaching.

Please reach out to your school nurse if you would like to pick up a free Narcan Kit for your household. You can also pick up Narcan Kits at the local Kodiak Public Health Office.
