Summit - Up

August 27th 2021

Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Responsible.

Welcome Back!

Dear Families,

We are so excited that our students are back. Thank you for the energy, flexibility and grace you have shown our staff as we start another pandemic school year. This is our third academic year that is impacted by COVID restrictions and we want you all to know how seriously we take our responsibility of caring for our students that are currently all under the age to be vaccinated.

Laughter and good times continue at Summit Street School and more than ever we wish to engage our families with their child's academic day. We are hopeful to schedule an evening Open House in September when we get approval to have families in our buildings. We will have an outdoor PTO meeting on September 14th at 6:00 pm at Summit Street School. This is a great way to connect with other families and ask questions.

Have a fantastic week, please reach out to classroom teachers with questions and always feel free to call the main office.

Walking Wednesday's -Starting September 1st 7:15 am at Densmore Street Lot

Wednesday's - Students, parents & siblings, please join Mrs. Gruendling and other school adults for a brisk walk to school on the “Wednesday Walking School Bus.” This is a great way to start the school day. Starting Point: We will meet children at the parking lot on Densmore Drive; the lot next to the old police station. This walking bus will depart at 7:15. Adults will stay with their children at the lot until staff arrives. We will walk rain or shine, sleet or snow but not in thunder/lightning or temperatures hovering near O (zero) or below!

Free and Reduced Application

Great news, this year meals are free for all families. The menu can be found on our website. We will send a print copy home in Friday folders as well with an envelope to seal and send back in. All forms are kept confidential and delivered to the Child Nutrition Program. Even though meals are free we are still asking families to fill out the Free and Reduced lunch form as it is an important part of funding for programs for our students. Completing this form You can fill it out online at:

https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application

Picture Day

Picture day is September 2nd. Bring your Smile! Forms went home with your child on August 27th.

Wednesday's

Reminder- every Wednesday, students will be dismissed at 1:45. Please make arrangements for your child's after school pickup plan.

Friday Folders

Friday folders are being sent home today to share important information with you. Typically these folders arrive home on a Friday and may include: student work samples along with other important notices. Students are expected to return this folder on the next school day. Please take a few minutes and read through everything that is in your child’s Friday folder.

Pick Up and Drop Off

Our drop off and pick up parking lot is at Holy Family and we have an additional parking lot on School Street! Please do not drop off in front of Summit Street School as it is a bus lane during pick up and drop off. Children enter the school from the playground each morning at 7:45 a.m.

Adult supervision is available on the playground by 7:35 a.m. Please do not drop your child off before that time.

At 2:40, kindergarten children and afternoon PK students are dismissed out back directly to parents/guardians. At 2:45 p.m., children in grades 1-3 are delivered to the playground by their teachers for dismissal and it is expected that all children will be picked up at this time. Please be sure we know your child's after school plan and any busing changes. Pick up dismissal is out the back of the building and Kindergarten Rec Kids busing is out the front of the building.

Children who are walking/biking home without parents are asked to leave and walk/bike home right away to ensure they cross with a stationed crossing guard. Please discuss the plan for the end of the day with your child and the teacher.

Holy Family

All cars entering the parking lot are to go in a COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction......another words, when you enter from School Street, go RIGHT and around. There will be NO parking in this lane. Also, based on the arrows painted on the Holy Family driveway, you will NOT drive UP from Lincoln St....this is a DOWN ONLY lane. If you want to join your children on the playground at drop-off or pickup time, park in a designated parking slot at Holy Family or in Summit's lower parking lot. Longer stays at school will require you to park somewhere other than Holy Family as they need their lot available for events at church. Thank you!

Recess Expectation

Here at Summit Street School we believe that teaching kids to be self-aware and navigate small problems on the playground is more beneficial than insisting that students, staff, and parents memorize a long list of “do”s and “don’t”s. As such, we are teaching recess expectations similarly to how we teach all other school expectations. The overarching guidelines that we will be reinforcing with children is that on the playground we need to Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Responsible. What is safe for one group of students may not be safe for a younger or different group of students. We are working hard to establish playground supervision teams that can collectively navigate these conversations and teachable moments with our students. We encourage you to do the same thing when supervising your children on the playground.

A Note from the Health Office

What a week it has been getting to know Summit Street School and meeting all of the wonderful students! As the new school nurse at Summit, I am excited to be here to support the health needs of everyone in our learning community.

It's very important that any students exhibiting fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose, lack of smell/taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches, or headaches STAY HOME. If you have any question as to whether or not your child should attend school, please keep them home and call or email the health office for a consult at 857-7644 or stsai@ewsd.org.

To ensure safety for all, if your child arrives at school with health symptoms or develops them while at school, we will call families for immediate pick up.

It would be helpful if all families could send their children with an extra set of clothes in their backpacks.

I look forward to working with all of the Summit families this year!

Thank you,
