BIS Newsletter Week 7 Term 1
Friday 19th March 2021
This week has been a successful week of celebrating Francophone Language. Thank you to all of those who contributed with ideas and joined us by dressing in red, white and blue today to celebrate all things French. I have loved seeing so many students learning a few new words and finding out facts about some of the 44 countries that speak French.
On Wednesday, we were, of course, very proud of our Emirates Team New Zealand for winning the America's Cup. Many of our students have loved the races and have felt a sense of excitement, angst and relief as we raced against the Italian Team. The comments made by both skippers were also ones that made us proud as they showed humility and excellent sportsmanship. This is a great example to our students of how to win well and how to lose with grace. It is also a great example of perseverance and effort being given to a difficult task. As a proud New Zealander I definitely celebrated our win but also felt very humbled by the years of effort that have gone into this achievement.
It is very easy for us to focus on the disruptions of lock downs and feel like we have lost 2 weeks of learning time. However, we have seen resilient students bouncing back after both lockdowns. Our year 7 students have quickly adjusted to subject teaching and have learnt how things work at Intermediate School. Everyday, I am lucky to see passionate students engaged in learning and willing to share their ideas, creativity and reflections.
We have a fantastic school and today I wanted to thank you all for your input. Our staff are amazing and they choose to work here because they love the students in this community. Thank you for sending your child to our school. Our students are well behaved, have lovely manners, apply effort to their work and consistently make us smile. Thank you for the wonderful people that you are raising. They make us want to come to work each day.
To those of you who have volunteered to help on sports zone days, thank you for your time. There will be many requests for parent helpers throughout the year and I want you to know that we realise how tricky it can be to juggle your day to fit this in but it is very much appreciated by us.
Finally, to those of you who have added our School Ball to your calendar (Sat 10 April), thank you for supporting this event. Please, please, please get your tickets this week so we can continue to plan with event with some knowledge of the numbers who will be attending. More info below about this amazing event.
Enjoy the weekend and remember that you are always welcome to come in and visit or contact us if you have any queries, concerns or things to share.
We are always proud when our staff are recognised for their talents. In the latest issue of Interface Magazine, 2 of our talented teachers have had articles published about their work with students and eSports. Miss Mitchell has written an article called Recognising students for less conventional skills and Mr Wyatt has written about his experiences taking a team of students to the eSports competition last year. It was at these eSport games that Mr Wyatt and Miss Mitchell had teams competing against each other. Miss Mitchell's team from BIS came out as winners that day and we are very pleased that both Miss Mitchell and Mr Wyatt will be sharing their skills with our students this year.
The magazine articles can be read online by following the link below.
Our Community Ball - Puttin' On The Ritz
Please get a group of your friends together and plan to get dressed up and join us to dance the night away. As well as having an incredible night, you will also be helping our school to raise much need funds for our school library.
The success of this evening depends on our parent community supporting us. We need you to buy your tickets this week, we need you to encourage others to buy tickets this week, we need you to spread the word that this event is happening and it's going to be an evening not to be missed. Thank you.

Guidelines for Concerns and Complaints
Despite our best efforts, there may be times when you feel that you need to register a complaint. To avoid unnecessary upset or misunderstandings please ensure that if you have an issue or concern, that you talk to us early so we can resolve it quickly. A lot of unnecessary problems can be avoided when communication is open and honest.
We observe the following guidelines:
1. In the first instance please attempt to resolve the issue by discussing it with the teacher concerned. If you feel that the issue remains unresolved, please ask to speak with the team leader or a Deputy Principal. However, if you feel that the issue is still unresolved, then the parent or guardian should make a written complaint to the Principal and an appointment will be made to discuss the issue.
2. To discuss the complaint an appointment will be made to suit both parties.
3. Complainants who feel they have not had their problems addressed after following the process should formally complain to the Board of Trustees in written form.
4. All written complaints will be responded to verbally and in writing.
Please see our school website for the full guidelines, procedures and policies surrounding concerns and complaints.
Please ensure we have an up-to-date email address, download our BIS School App, like our Facebook page and check our website regularly for more detailed information about what is happening at BIS.
