Depressants
A depressant is a drug that causes neurotransmission levels in the brain to decrease. They are also called "downers."
Drugs:
- alcohol
- tranquilizers
- opium
- hypnotic
- sleeping pill
- valium
Statistics/Facts
- Slow down brain, making it hard for addict to feel normal without them
- Sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and alcohol are the most popular depressants
- over 16 short-term effects of depressants
- increase risks of high blood sugar, weight gain, and diabetes
Hallucinogens
A hallucinogen is a psycho addictive drug that is divided into three categories: psychedelics, deliriants, and dissociatives. Hallucinogens cause changes in emotion, perception, thought, and consciousness.
Drugs:
- Marijuana
- LSD
- Mushrooms
- PCP
Statistics:
- LSD is responsible for approx. 5000 hospital visits each year
- 11% of high school seniors have used LSD
- 7% of high school seniors have tried any hallucinogen other than LSD or PCP
- The amount of PCP use have gone down 10% since 1979 from 13% to just 3%
Stimulants
Stimulants are psycho addictive drugs that cause temporary improvement in either physical or mental abilities.
Drugs:
- Caffeine
- Speed
- Nicotine
- Meth
- Coke
Punishments
Depressants:
- Alcohol is legal to drink when 21 and over. Drinking and driving is illegal.
- Tranquilizers are not illegal when prescribed by a doctor and are taken accordingly.
- Opium is completely illegal
Hallucinogens:
- Marijuana is illegal- possession is up to one year in prison and $1000 fine.
- LSD is illegal- possession if a maximum of one year in prison
- Magic Mushrooms are illegal and punishable by 2-10 year in state jail.
Stimulants:
- Caffeine is not illegal
- Meth is punishable anywhere from 6-20 years in prison
- Nicotine is legal, but must be 18 and over to buy in the form of cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars, etc.
