Mar Vista Parent Newsletter

Week of November 30, 2020

Dear Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and found a safe way to spend it with family and friends. I can't believe there are only three more weeks until Winter Break!

This week, students begin taking the second round of MAP assessments in grades 2-6. These assessments in Reading and Math give us a metric by which to measure student growth and also provide us with useful information on how to adjust planning and instruction to meet student needs. Expect to receive results of your child's MAP assessments before Winter Break and feel free to contact us with questions. See more info in Mr. J's section below.

Please remember to contact your child's teacher if there is a reason he/she is unable to attend the live meetings (i.e. doctor's appointment, travel, etc.). Your child may still connect with the teacher and complete daily assignments and be counted as "present" on their attendance. Remember that travel is not an excused absence. You may also contact the office if you need assistance.

As a reminder, please support the Mar Vista Virtual Auction which is hosted by the Mar Vista Parent Club (MVPs). This year it is a joint event with Valencia Elementary. Please go to this link to view the items and to support Mar Vista. More information is below.

With gratitude,

Stephanie Monroe

PVUSD Important Announcement from 11/16

Press Release: PVUSD Continues Distance Learning through March 1, 2021:

Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update

Hi Families,

This week’s Kindness Challenge involves some art! Find a nice flat rock, decorate it and write something kind on it, and place it in your neighborhood for someone to find!

Remember, students can also work to complete any of these acts of kindness each day:

Thank you for your support in spreading kindness throughout our community!

Students will be taking the MAP tests over the next two weeks. Your child’s teacher will give more specifics about the days and times of these tests. Please see the email I sent out last week with more information. This document has other important information about the test.

I also want to encourage all 3rd-6th grade students to complete at least 45-60 minutes per week on the MAP Accelerator program. Students can access this through Clever. This program is designed to support students in math at their level (based on the MAP assessment) and I have found great success when students regularly use it. Here is a video I made showing how students can access this:

Spirit Theme: 80's Neon Theme!

This week's theme is 80's Neon! Share a photo of your child with some throwback looks and relive the days of big hair and acid washed jeans! Send photos to to be featured in the Mar Vista News next week!

Read what teachers are saying...

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa

Students now have a 3 week loan period and renewals are almost always an option! If I have a pressing need to have the book returned to fulfill another student's hold, I will give them a head's up for a week.

Bookshop Santa Cruz Holiday Book Drive

From Bookshop Santa Cruz:

Local public school libraries always count on new books from Bookshop’s annual Holiday Book Drive to increase and update their collections, but between Covid-19 and the recent wildfires, they need our help more than ever. Many books that were checked out never made it back to schools, so libraries’ inventories are low while the need for books is high.

"Our school library lost many books in our collection in the spring when students were not allowed on campus even to return books. Many 8th graders moved on to the high school and students moved away without having the usual process to return books at the end of the school year." —Martha Dyer, Librarian, Mission Hill Middle School

Donations in any amount are so appreciated!

Donations will be distributed by Santa Cruz City Schools, Pajaro Valley Unified School District, Live Oak School District, and Scotts Valley Unified School District.

Bookshop's Holiday Book Drive is cosponsored by the Santa Cruz Warriors and the Good Times. You can contribute by making a monetary donation to school libraries and classrooms, or specific books at a discount to donate. Our book drive will run online and in-store through December 31st.
