Graduation Donations - Every year we have a number of graduating seniors that are hard pressed to pay for their graduation cap and gown or to be able to attend the Senior breakfast with their classmates. At Churchill High School we work to make sure every student has a meaningful graduation experience. This comes at a cost. If you are able to support some of our Seniors with a financial contribution we would be very grateful for your support. Checks can be made out to Churchill High School in any amount. The typical cost of cap and gown is $35.
Environmental Future's Emerald Film Festival - Upcoming events! This year's theme is Latinx Environmentalisms. Events are free and open to public. The Emerald Earth Film Festival returns for a third year, this time with films devoted to Latinx environmentalisms.
The festival, co-sponsored by UO English, UO Ethnic Studies, and the Center for Environmental Futures, will kick off on April 10th with a screening of Food Chains (2014, dir. Sanjay Rawal), an eye-opening documentary on hunger strikes launched by rural Florida farm workers to protest poor wages and working conditions. After the screening, festival co-organizers Professors David Vázquez (English) and Sarah Wald (English and Environmental Studies) will moderate a question-and-answer period.
The second feature in the festival is We the Animals (2018, dir. Jeremiah Zagar), a stunning coming-of-age film that follows a young man's efforts to contend with working-class life, a temperamental father, and his emerging sexuality. The film is based on Justin Torres' novel of
the same name. Torres will lead a question-and-answer period after the screening.
The final screening is for the thought-provoking Sleep Dealer (2009),
which imagines a dystopian future in which Mexican workers plug their bodies into digital networks that power robots in the United States. Director Alex Rivera will host a question-and-answer period after the screening. All screenings are hosted by the Bijou Art Cinemas, located at 492 E. 13th Ave.
We the Animals: April 24th, 7:30 PM
Sleep Dealer: May 9th, 7:30 PM

Kudos
Special thank you to everyone for their hard work with Erin's Law last week. Two more weeks to go. Special thanks to our counselors Katy McAuliffe, Nita Halstead, and Casey Tiemann, and our 9th grade transition support coordinator Gene Chism, who made themselves available who put in some extra love and acre for our students that needed an additional level of Churchill love.
Kudos to the entire staff for the fastest fire drill ever last week. 3 minutes and 36 seconds. Why is this important? It says that we are efficient at exiting and ensuring the building is clear. As far as safety goes, this is a big deal and we should be proud.
Many thanks and gratitude to Kevin Summerfield for organizing and coordinating the student leadership experience at the annual African American Youth Leadership Conference. Nit only is this a tall order with organization and supervision, but the opportunity you provided to our students is valuable and critical. Special props go out to Keyshawn Nauden for receiving a $500 scholarship. Way to go Keyshawn!
Congratulations to Churchill High School Baseball team for your selection as the Les Schwab Tires Team of the Month. This recognition comes with a trophy and a donation to the program. This is a new award for this year and Les Schwab is very excited to honor our school and team for its performance, dedication in the classroom, and service to the community.
