Open Announcements
September 19, 2021
Dear Open High Family,
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 to October 15 of each year to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans. Check out this site for lots of great information on the many Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced our country. For book lovers, here's just one list of books by Latinx writers worth looking at. Please visit our basement library during lunch to check out one of these or another book. See the flyer below for details. We encourage students to take photos of themselves and what they're reading too! Tag us on Instagram @openhighrva #OpenHive. Let's make reading for pleasure what's contagious around here!
Students can also visit one of the "Book Nooks" throughout the building to find an awesome selection of fiction and non-fiction books. Use the QR code on the bookshelves so we can reward readers who read for pleasure! Books currently featured in the first-floor hallway were selected by the UR/Open Book Advisory Council last year. Thanks to Lorah, Caroline, Open, and UR students for making these high quality, high interest books available to all our students. Just grab one, it won't bite, well...maybe a little.
Yearbook Photos will take place on Monday, Sept. 20 throughout the day. There will be a Make-up Day on Oct. 8 as well. Order forms were provided the first week of school and are also available in the office.
Thursdays at Open have long been a special component of our program. Along with Family and Town Meetings, we offer unique elective classes which support our Ten Dispositions and cover a wide variety of topics and interests. This year we have modified the schedule so students have between 2-4 experiences. These workshops will begin on Sept. 30, and our schedule is altered as a result. This Thursday we also have an altered afternoon schedule in order to meet in Family. Click here to see the full Thursday schedule for the year.
All new students were given an Open High T-shirt on Friday designed by senior Rose Field. Make sure you see Ryan in the Office to pick yours up if you missed it. We will make these and other T-shirts available as a fundraiser, so stay tuned if you wish to upgrade your wardrobe.
New students should also join Micah's Counselor Connection as well as our school-wide Google Classroom. This will help keep you connected to all things Open.
Virtual Back to School Night is Wednesday, Sept. 29, 6:00-7:30 p.m. More information to come.
Juniors and seniors--please review details below on College Preparation, and know that your Open High Family is ready to help you transition to what's next. SAT Prep Kick Off begins tomorrow after school.
Have a wonderful week!
In joyful service,
Clary Carleton

College Preparation
All seniors should set up an individual appointment with Micah to discuss post-high school plans. You can always reach Micah at mdavis7@rvaschools.net to schedule an appointment. Remember to stay connected through the Counselor Connection where college visits, scholarships, and opportunities are regularly posted.
Our new GRASP advisor, Amy Swierczewski, will be available in the Computer Lab on Wednesdays. GRASP is a key partner helping students and families navigate financial aid and scholarships. All students should take advantage of this opportunity!
RPS also provides PSAT/NMSQT testing for Grades 9-11 in preparation for the SAT. This year testing will take place on October 26. You can read more about the PSAT/NMSQT on the College Board site. On this same day we will host a Senior Day at Randolph Community Center for our seniors.
And if you're a senior, make sure you get your senioritis vaccine! Come see Clary if you are in need of an inoculation!
