Transitions
Did you know that saving 15 minutes a day through the use of EFFICIENT transitions equals 45 EXTRA HOURS of time per year????? What would you do with that precious time????
Transitions can be categorized into 3 types-
~ Entering the class and taking a seat
~ Switching from one academic activity to another
~ Exiting class
Just like any procedure, transitions are taught through explicit explanations, clear modeling, rehearsal, and review. AND REPEAT (how many times??)!
Could you develop signals to decrease the verbal clutter?
Could you WAIT in the same spot each time, without any talking from you, the teacher, until everyone is settled? You will be surprised at what will happen after a week.
Could you develop exit directions so the students are clear on what to do?
Could transitions be the same every time? Same verbal cues and prompts? Routine and predictability is established.
Could you develop a silent dismissal with clear procedures and model it?
