Principal Young's Caregiver Update
November 3, 2022
Message from Principal Young
Dear Glen Hills Caregivers,
The Glen Hills Way, states the following about respect in our school community:
- We are a community that respects ourselves, others, and our school community through our words and works.
There are many ways that this is demonstrated each day at Glen Hills. Below are just a few moments that I have witnessed in the last month that demonstrate the commitment that staff, students, and families have to upholding the Glen Hills Way.
- Eighth grade students helping out the custodians to get the cafeteria ready without being asked.
- A sixth grade student encouraging and supporting a fourth grade mentee.
- A teacher extending a hand to hold to a child experiencing anxiety.
- A supervisory aide setting a daily goal with a student to keep them focused on their learning.
- A caregiver who was visiting patiently greeting each of their child's friends who were so curious to meet them.
- A community member taking time to Zoom in and meet with our students regarding their Future Cities project.
It makes me incredibly proud to see the ways in which respect is demonstrated each day within our school community.
Anna M. Young
What did you learn at school today?
This is a common question that caregivers ask and that can sometimes elicit a "shoulder shrug" or "I don't know?" from an adolescent. As you enter these conversations with your children, we would like to point out one of the ways that teacher's seek to solidify student learning. Educational research indicates that teacher clarity around what is being learned is strongly linked to student achievement. This year Glen Hills moved to a modified block schedule and as part of the instructional framework, teachers work to start class by addressing the following questions:
- What are you learning today?
- How will you know you are successful?
- How does what you are learning today connect to your life or your other learning?
