Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind- Chapter 2: The Rules for Engagement ( TSI Focus Reading)
Synopsis: This chapter reveals the 5 core rules for engagement that will help you build a foundation for success.
The 5 Rules for Engagement:
- Upgrade your Attitude
- Build Relationships and Respect:
- Get Buy-In
- Embrace Clarity
- Show Your Passion
Last week we dove a little deeper into the 1st two rules. This week we are going to explore rules 3 and 4.
Rule 3: Get Buy In
- When you build relationships with students and earn their respect, they will buy into what you are "selling".
- When getting a student to "buy into" a lesson, you need a HOOK.
Solutions You Can Use:
- Issue the "bigger kid" challenge. By simply saying, "This is something that is usually done in ___ grade, but I think you might be able to handle it."
- Offer an Incentive: Consider offering an incentive for students to complete their work. For example: If you finish early, we can do ____.
- Pique students' curiosity: Example: Mystery Box before a lesson, Sharing a secret with the kids about an upcoming lesson...etc.
- Start a Competition: Promote the students to compete against themselves and others.
- Chunk down the buy-in: Promoting ways for students to work with partners in class while also helping them build relationships with each other.
- Lower the Stakes: Students don't want to feel unsuccessful in class and in front of their peers. If a tough lesson is approaching, consider telling the students that this is something you have assigned as homework in the past. This will help make the lesson less intimidating.
- Use their Imagination: Think of ways that you can bring their imagination into the lesson.
Rule 4: Embrace Clarity
- To be extraordinary at engagement, you need to master the details that make up the big picture. (Pg.29) The clarity of teachers' words and actions is strongly linked to student engagement.
- Key factors for achieving clarity: Plan with a purpose and think through the lesson from a student's point-of-view.
Solutions You Can Use:
- Use fewer words: Speak with intention and pause, instead of adding words.
- Say what you want from students, not what you don' want: Telling students what you don't want only focuses on the negative. Here is an example: Replace "I need your eyes up front" with " Eyes up front, please.
- Give clear, simple directions: The more time you spend explaining an activity, the more time you give the students to wonder why you are justifying it.

Staff Shout Outs
Hello Ms. Israel and Ms. Hess,
I wanted to thank you for an amazing concert last night at Brooklyn Park Elementary School! The 3rd grade orchestra, recorders, and chorus all sounded amazing.
My wife and I were surprised when Ronan told us he was interested in playing the violin this year. We're thrilled with the way you foster students' enthusiasm and produce terrific musical results!! We're looking forward to the Spring Concert!
Sincerely,
