Thought For the Week

Most of us end up with no more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives. ~Andy Rooney

How appropriate that we celebrate staff appreciation during the first week of we enter the final month of school and (in some ways) one of the most challenging times of the year! Scientific studies and brain research have concluded that focusing on gratitude fortifies us during times of adversity and emotional turmoil and leads to greater happiness and resilience. Of all the attributes one can develop, gratitude is most strongly associated with mental health. This is so important for all of us! I'd like to start a week focused on GRATITUDE:
*Thank you for choosing to serve students who need a lot more than children in other parts of our community.

*Thank you for showing up for our kids each day, even when you are tired, not feeling 100%, or burdened with home/family responsibilities and worries.

*Thank you for pitching in to help with duties, cafeteria challenges, recess support, and
covering for absent colleagues.

*Thank you for persistence and faith throughout a year of changes.
*Thank you for lifting up colleagues in need and forming supportive relationships with teammates.
*Thank you for challenging the status quo and taking risks.
*Thank you for honest conversations and feedback that helps MEMS continue to grow.
As the end of the year brings news of teammate transitions, I want to acknowledge that while changes can be difficult, that all of us are committed to the journey of helping children fulfill their hopes and dreams. This commitment unifies us, no matter where the journey takes us after this school year. Let us continue to find the best in each day, celebrate victories large and small, and enjoy the present moment. Whether you have been at MEMS for 20+ years or one year, each of you has made an impact on children and each other in this community - this is a legacy that will live on. That is truly something to be grateful for - and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

Learning Corner

Over the next few weeks, the SIP team will continue learning about our new assessment tool for SIP planning (Indistar). MEMS will be self-assessing on 12 key indicators as we write our next SIP plan. One key indicator is around social-emotional learning - an area that has been on our minds and the focus of discussion as we look at the needs of the whole child (particularly as we consider the challenges of children in poverty).
