The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of December 10 - 14!
Message from the principal
At UHS, we have great career exploration and internship opportunities through our CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs in business, industrial technology, family and consumer sciences, and information technology. For example, for many years our Marketing Internship and School Age Child have given students interested in marketing and teaching an opportunity to get real world experiences in those fields in the community.
Just this week on Wednesday, December 12th, during Connections, students interested in DMACC Career Advantage programs (in areas like nursing, welding, and many more) can sign up to meet with DMACC advisors to learn more about these programs. These have been very popular programs for our junior and senior students.
This fall, a small group of UHS students has helped us pilot our new StELR (Students Experiencing Life’s Relevance) internship. It is a business partnership program where junior and/or senior students collaborate with peers and professionals to learn critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills in order to develop solutions for existing business challenges. StELR is an extension of the Iowa Quality Center Student TEAMS (Training in Evaluating, Analyzing, and Measuring Systems) program that has provided opportunities for students in the Urbandale Community School District since 2013.
Our students have had internships at Urbandale businesses including Delta Dental of Iowa and Launch IT. Mike Moran, Director of Metro West Learning Academy, has helped lead student learning as well as overall direction of the program. During the StELR pilot, participating students have also worked together to problem solve issues like parking improvements at UHS and ideas for transition planning at one of our elementary schools. Pictured below are StELR senior participants April Czarnecki, Blake Arntzen, and Matt Moran.
StELR Empowers Students & Strengthens Businesses
Broaden Leadership & Collaboration Skills
Investigate Real Business Challenges
Develop Viable Business Solutions
Participate In On-Site Field Experience
Earn Dual-Credit Through DMACC
By utilizing proven collaboration, leadership, and continual improvement tools and practices, students have built confidence in their abilities to solve real business challenges in order to achieve successful outcomes in any field of study. Our hope is that businesses have achieved greater efficiencies through the implementation of the StELR program as they integrate new approaches for problem solving and fresh perspectives provided by future leaders.
Students interested in any of these programs should inquire with their school counselor as we move into scheduling for the 2019-20 school year.
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

Urbandale Education Foundation -- Brad Peyton Memorial information
As we enter into another holiday season, the Urbandale Education Foundation would like to extend a sincere thank you for your support of the Brad Peyton Memorial Golf event. We are grateful for the 200 sponsors, participants, volunteers and dinner guests who came together this past June to honor a family, celebrate a life, and support Urbandale Schools.
Since the tourney began in 2014, we’ve raised over $100,000 in support of scholarships for students, classroom grants for teachers, and alumni connections. All of which wouldn’t have been possible without you!
As we begin to plan for our 2019 event, we hope you will again consider supporting the golf tournament. We are recruiting Title, Lead, Lunch, Beverage, and Hole sponsors. Details of all sponsorship levels are listed in the attached PDF; you’re also welcome to sign up online.
You may be in the midst of planning your charitable donations for the coming year. We will be contacting you shortly after the first of the year to request your commitment to supporting the upcoming Peyton Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2019, at Hyperion Field Club.
Thank you for your support and we’re looking forward to another successful event in 2019!
Sincerely,
Dan Meyer

Shout Outs
Music performances delight audiences!
Last weekend, members of the UHS Jazz Bands and UHS Vocal Music program put on enjoyable performances at the UHS Performing Arts Center in front of a host of students, family and friends. On Friday, November 30th, the UHS and UMS Jazz Bands came together to put on a terrific show! Ensembles played a variety of pieces that highlighted not only the skill of the ensemble itself but also that of the individuals within it. Great work!
On Sunday, December 2nd, the UHS Vocal Music Program put on its winter concert. They performed pieces from a variety of cultures and genres, highlighting skills and talents of so many UHS vocalists. The nearly hour and a half show let each of the four choirs show off the music pieces they've been working on for the past months. The show ended with all four choirs coming together on one song. Great job, singers!
