Babies with PKU are missing an enzyme called phenylalanine hydroxylase, which is needed to break down an essential amino acid called phenylalanine. The substance is found in foods that contain protein. If phenylalanine builds up in the liver it can move to the brain, build up, and cause mental retardation.
Patients must be on a little to no protein diet. They must also be given a formula that helps keep their levels low but also get the nutrition they need. They are very limited in their diet, but it becomes a normal for them If they keep with it.
