Crescent Harbor Elementary I June 2023
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Crescent Harbor Families,
There are several of us who are coming up on the sunset of our time here at CHE, and it's a time for us to feel sadness for leaving while celebrating many happy memories of interactions, students and families who have left a mark, and events that have us leaving with a smile.
After thirteen years, I can think of several events that stand out in memory: our first Walk-a-Thon, which raised about $8000 in a time when we didn't expect nearly so much; a K-Kids challenge for the American Cancer Society on the last day of school that resulted in my being duct-taped to the wall of the gym; PTA efforts throughout the years to find ways to engage families in partnership with our school while also helping to bring fun to meetings and events; and the many remarkable teachers who have impressed me beyond words with their passion and skill to do what's right for kids.
I have seen our reputation here at CHE soar in our community, to the point that we celebrate many partnerships with community organizations that support us and who share our passion for serving our students and school community. These include but are not limited to the Rotary Club, Soroptimist of Oak Harbor, Living Word Church, First United Methodist Church, the local Masonic Lodge, the Oak Harbor Kiwanis Club, and our partnership commands at NAS Whidbey. I have seen our school community, and the greater Oak Harbor community, unite behind our students through great events such as COVID reopening and through more regular events such as the start of the school year.
I have brought my own children to Crescent Harbor with confidence and pride in what they will learn while in these walls. I have seen many different curriculum adoptions and initiatives embraced by staff that introduce new materials while enabling teachers to keep their focus on what's best for kids and on quality instruction. I have seen staff come and go throughout the years due to retirements, military moves, life changes, and other choices, but universally what's been in their hearts is service to our students. And I have worked with wonderful custodians, paraeducators, food service personnel, office staff, and teachers.
I am excited beyond belief that CHE will build a new school in a couple of years, thanks to the advocacy of our state legislators and our district leadership.
I am saddened by leaving at the end of this school year, but I am confident that Mr. Weinsheimer will work with the CHE staff in continuing to serve our students and our community. When I take off, please know that a bit of my heart will be purple and filled with all the happiness and love that I have felt here at Crescent Harbor.
Wishing the CHE school community all the best in the coming year and beyond,
Sincerely,
Kate Valenzuela

NURSE NOTES
Dear CHE Families:
We have had a great year working with your child. As we wrap up our school year, we want to pass along important information about your child’s healthcare and school medications.
END OF SCHOOL YEAR AND MEDICATIONS:
Please remember to pick up all medications your student had at school by 12:00 PM on Friday, June 16, 2023. We are not able to send medications home with your student or store medications over the summer. All medications left after 12:00 PM on the 16th will be destroyed. If your student has a life-threatening condition, medications must remain at school until the end of the school day on Friday, June 16th.
SCHOOL YEAR 2023-24:
ALL medication administration authorizations and health plans are good for one school year only and must be renewed annually. If your child requires a health plan or needs to take medication during the school day for the school year 2023-2024 (this includes any prescription, over-the-counter medications, or inhalers used at school, during team sports practices, or after school activities), please download the appropriate form from the district website https://www.ohsd.net/Page/2126. Forms may also be picked up in your school’s office. Have your healthcare provider complete the form before school starts in the fall. Parents/Guardians must sign all forms. Please bring the completed medication authorization, health plan, and the medication in the original over-the-counter or labeled prescription container when school begins in the fall. Medications cannot be accepted by students.
LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES, SEVERE ASTHMA, AND SEIZURES: Health plans and emergency medication for Diabetes, Life-Threatening Allergies, Severe Asthma & Seizures must be at school before the first day of the new school year, September 5, 2023. School office staff can begin accepting these items in August. School nursing staff will be available starting August 21, 2023. Students with life-threatening conditions will be excluded from school until the signed health plan and medication are at school. If your student has diabetes, your school nurse will contact you to set up a meeting prior to the first day of school to establish the required diabetes health plan. Current healthcare providers’ orders from the most recent diabetes checkup will be required.
Thank you for your cooperation, and please have a happy, healthy summer.
Nurses Casey Sluyter & Jen Wutzke
