How Lateness is Defined
Students who are in the Car Rider line at 9:05 but are not yet in their classroom are marked late. In order to be considered on-time, students must be in their classroom by 9:05. Being in the Car Rider line or in the school building does not count as being on-time.
If students arrive late as Bus Riders, they are NOT marked late by the teacher. When buses are late, this is considered the fault of the school and is not counted on the student's attendance record.
Walker - Routines and Important Info
All walkers , even when accompanied by adults, must use the crosswalks rather than crossing the Car Rider line in the AM or PM.
Walkers can fall into 2 categories:
- Independent Walkers - students 3rd grade and older
- Accompanied Walkers - students 2nd grade and younger
Independent Walkers are dismissed from the double doors by the flag pole. They can leave without being picked up by an adult. They can take responsibility for walking younger siblings home.
Accompanied Walkers are dismissed from the double doors near the bus loop. They need to be checked out by an adult on the student's approved list (must have ID) or somebody with the student's Edgemere Walker ID card.
Car Rider - Routines and Important Info
Review the importance of staying on the safe side of the yellow line on the sidewalk.
Traffic Pattern
- Because there are so many vehicles and pedestrians moving at the same time, we have to have rules to ensure safety and respect for everyone's time.
- Cones have been set up to help guide drivers.
- Cars should enter with the school on their right, and not turn left into the school. The far lane of Sparrows Point Rd should not be used for turning into the school. Once on school property, the line goes right as it enters the drive and snakes around the teacher parking lot, so that we can reduce traffic on the road.
- We permit left turns when there is no existing car line of parents waiting on Sparrows Point Road to enter. If a driver is repeatedly turning left in front of others, a conference will be held with that driver and Car Rider Line privileges may be suspended or altered for that family for a period of time.
- Parents who wish, may drop their child off through the Car Rider line that begins at the school entrance on Sparrows Point Rd.
- Parents can drop students off prior to 8:50, but there is absolutely no school supervision prior to 8:50. If students arrive before 8:50 they must stand respectfully, without playing. Doors open at 8:50 and staff assists with the Car Rider line until 9:05.
- Once in line, pull forward as much as possible. Stopping a car at the main entrance is nice for the student, but not efficient. With 200 Car Riders, it is important to pull forward the entire way. This allows more cars to have access to the sidewalk.
- If possible, teach your child to open the car door once you are stopped and they have your permission. Staff will help with doors that may have the child safety lock on.
- Remain inside the car if possible. If you have a student in need of your support, we may be able to provide special accommodations to allow you the time and grace to support your child's needs.
Afternoon Pick Up
- Display your child's Edgemere ID Card in the front right side of the windshield the entire time. The more visible it is, the faster the line moves. If you have lost your child's card, or need additional copies, call the school. Extra copies can be provided.
- Pull Forward as much as possible, even if you see your child on the sidewalk. They will walk to where your vehicle stops. This allows more cars to have access to the sidewalk.

Bus Rider - Routines and Important Info
Riding the bus is a privilege.
Pick up/Drop off Times
Buses should arrive at bus stops within 10 minutes of the designated time. If a bus is not arriving when scheduled, please feel free to contact the school. We will relay your concern to the Office of Transportation. In the afternoon we will do our best to share if a bus is running late using our Facebook page. This is the most expedient method for updating our families.
Buses have 3 main rules:
- sit in seat,
- keep hands/feet to self, and
- use respectful language (no screaming or profanity)
Bus Discipline
Students who do not follow safety rules will be referred to the office. Behavior will be investigated and parents will be contacted if there is a concern. A student may be suspended from the bus for a period of time for unsafe behaviors. Students may also have their bus privilege's terminated for the remainder of the year if their behavior is persistently endangering other's safety. Our goal is to allow drivers to focus on the road rather than on the student behavior.
Front Door Pick Up
- Double Doors by Flag Pole - Independent Walkers
- Double Doors by Bus Loop - Accompanied Walkers
- Rec Room Doors - Car Riders
- Double Doors by Playground - Bus Riders
Changes in Dismissal
In emergencies, parents may need to change dismissal. Dismissal changes should only be used occasionally. A parent who is changing dismissal too frequently may be contacted by the school to aid in working out a simplified, more predictable plan for the child.
Dismissal changes are accepted until 3:00 each day. No changes are made after 3:00 to allow the office staff the time necessary to communicate all changes.
Changes can be shared:
- through a note brought in by the student in the morning,
- by telephone (443) 809-7507,
- by an email that goes to the teacher, Miss Kim (kgraybeal2@bcps.org) and Miss Helen (hshiflett@bcps.org). An email to the teacher alone may not be read in time.
