A note from the Principal
Dear Parents & Caregivers
As we come to the end of Semester One, it is an opportune time to reflect on the semester that has been and how much we have achieved together in the last six months.
Early on we hosted both the 'Parents and Friends' and 'School Advisory Council' Annual General Meetings. Both meetings allowed us to present nominations and elect parents to positions on both groups. As a result, we now have a very strong group of parents supporting the school.
We have implemented two literacy intervention programs, MiniLit and MacqLit. Staff have been trained, learning areas have been created, resources purchased, and our students involved in the programs are already experiencing success and growing in confidence.
We have updated our school website and tried to create a space that is user friendly whilst also meeting the requirements expected of us. If you haven’t yet, make sure to check it out at http://www.stmarysdbrk.wa.edu.au/.
All our staff were trained in 'Making Jesus Real' and are currently implementing the principles and practices of the program throughout all our classes.
We have implemented a coaching program for all our teachers and education assistants. The program allows staff to reflect on their roles and responsibilities and set goals in relation to these. Our teachers are also involved in termly instructional coaching sessions where they are provided feedback on their lesson delivery and planning documents.
We have established an Online Learning Portal that, in the case of remote learning, can be activated allowing teachers to continue to build relationships and support their students at home with their learning.
Our staff have worked together to write a School Improvement Plan for the next three years. The plan draws on the experience of all our teachers, giving them specific areas of improvement to drive within our school.
We hosted fund raising events for the poor and marginalised and combined them with community building events that aimed to develop relationships between staff, parents and students, including teachers v students grudge matches. Which, might I add, were both won by the teachers!
Our staff have read, discussed and explored the latest research in neuroscience and learning. In response to this, our teachers have made practical changes to the way they deliver education in their classrooms.
We have recommitted ourselves to the Fogarty program as an Alumni school, and have continued to further develop our knowledge and delivery of Talk for Writing, Prime Maths, Letters and Sounds, and Soundwaves.
We have laid the groundwork for our first 3-Year-Old program, St Mary’s Mini Marvels Playgroup, which starts on the first Thursday (22 July 2021) back next term. The program is a parent involved program which will be run each Thursday morning from 9am -11am in the Kindergarten room. Mrs Donna Verhaaf will be coordinating the program.
We have completed and participated in many other annual commitments including NAPLAN, Sacramental programs, sporting activities and carnivals…amongst many other things.
We have also commenced capital development negotiations to have the school repaired and painted, and maintained over the next seven years. More news will come on this soon.
Our staff are extremely dedicated, knowledgeable and professional, and have worked very hard to make St Mary’s the best school it possibly can be. I wish them a relaxing and well-deserved break and hope that all our families have a safe and enjoyable time together over the holidays.
Thank you to Kate Jendrzejak who has been working in Year 1 over the last two weeks. The effort you have gone to in supporting our school and our students is much appreciated and I know the students have enjoyed having you in their class. Thank you!
Today we celebrated NAIDOC Day. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Thank you to our special visitors who helped us to learn about the history and the culture of the Aboriginal peoples of our region. Thank you also to Mrs Thompson for organising the day.
Reports will go home today. If you have any concerns regarding your child/ren's progress, please make a time to meet with their teacher next term.
School Advisory Council
This term, Mr Brad Gray and Mrs Sally Hunt, announced that they were leaving the SAC and their respective roles of Secretary and Chair. Thank you to both Brad and Sally for their efforts on both the School Board and School Advisory Council over the last couple of years. Their input and contributions to forward planning and decision making have been very much appreciated. In their place, current SAC members have filled their roles. Thank you to Mrs Joanne Swarbrick for accepting the Secretary position and to Mr Ben Rose for accepting the Chair position.
Pupil Free Day
There will be a pupil free day tomorrow, Friday 2nd July. On this day staff with be participating in Faith, Story, Witness training. FSW supports staff in understanding the history of the school and how that can be used to build our community moving forward.
Our school Cross Country was held last Wednesday, 23rd of June. Thank you to Mrs Pettersen for coordinating the day, and congratulations to all our runners who showed positive attitudes and great sportsmanship. Interschool teams have now been selected and notes have been sent home to parents.
The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA)
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3 and Year 5 students in Catholic primary schools across Western Australia will take part in the BRLA from the week commencing Monday 26 July in Term Three. More information will be sent home to parents at the beginning of next term.
Year 6 Disco
Last Friday, our Year 6 students hosted a sausage sizzle and disco as a camp fundraiser. Thank you to Mrs Cross for her efforts in organising the night and to DJ Jammon Gammon for taking time away from his busy world tour to come and DJ one night only at St Mary’s.
A huge thank you to Donnybrook IGA for donating $150 towards the disco/sausage sizzle.
CBCA Book Week
Please be advised that the Children’s Book Council of Australia book week, fair and parade will be held during Week 6 next term. The theme for this year in Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds.
Some parents have expressed their concern regarding the speed at which cars are entering and leaving the rear carpark. The safety of our students is paramount and as such I ask all parents to please slow down and keep an eye out for our children when driving through this area and the adjoining streets.
