History

  • January 1st 1863

  • Abraham Lincoln’s Executive Order freed the slaves

  • Applied to all slaves in the seceded states not border states (roughly 4 mil )

  • “all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free”

Significance

  • Transformed the war into a crusade and helped the union's moral
  • Freed millions of people and guaranteed freedom to all proceeding Americans
