For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - March 2018
From the Principal's Desk...
Spring has come and it has brought us beautiful weather. This is a time when God brings forth new life and it renews new hope in us. The period of light is longer, the air brings warmer breezes, and we can begin to spend more time outside. Flowers begin to fill our yards with new and bright colors. The trees are full of new buds and the grass becomes green again. Of course, there are the magical sounds of birds singing again. It is time to put this winter behind us and move into the new life around us. It is time to take in the presence of God and the new hope He brings us.
We have entered the 4th quarter of this school year. It brings changes and new beginnings to the OLQHS Community. Let us embrace these changes and trust that the Lord is guiding and leading us through these transformations. God will give us the courage and conviction to put these changes in place. May you find joy in the love and hope of the Lord.
God’s continued blessings as we journey together through this school year.
Joy in Christ,
JoAnn

Book Drive - Update!
Thank you so much to everyone for your help with our Lenten projects! We continue to be overwhelmed by your generosity! The book drive for Robinson Elementary was a great success. Together we collected 5,800 books!! The class with the most books collected was Mrs. Reed's 3rd grade class with 857 books! 2nd place was Mrs. Fink’s 5th graders with 437 and 3rd place was Mrs. Duhon’s 3rd graders.
Thank you to all who participated in this wonderful project!

5th Grade AR Readers!
There are 35 students in 5th grade that did a spectacular job with AR during the third nine weeks of school! These students earned ten (or more!) points in AR and will be recognized with a picnic lunch and pizza party. The students are: Zayne Armentor, Aila Brassieur, Lily Buckles, Reese Furman, Finn Gage, Kyndal Goodwin, Grayson Link, Brooke Miles, Mary Milligan, Ella Morton, James Murray, Lauren Pitt, Bentley Pittman, Natalia Reyes, Madison Stutes, Millie Thompson, Carter Weeks, Parker Anderson, Thomas Bebee, Jordan Buckhalter, Madeline Green, Grace Jester, Baylee Langley, Payton Langley, Maggie Nickel, Jamilyn Oro, London Owens, Charlie Trappey, Olivia Armentor, Kailey Barrett, Peyton Bijeaux, Camille Cunningham, Alayna Eisner, Meredith Hotard, and Sophia Thibodeaux. Congratulations!
5th Grade ELA News!
The fifth grade classes have been working on author’s purpose and focusing on persuasive writing using ethos, pathos, and logos. We had a special guest speaker, Mr. Peter O’Carroll, come and talk to the classes about how businesses use persuasion in advertising. He shared with us many televised commercials his company has produced! Thank you Mr. O’Carroll.
The students also wrote letters to Mrs. Bushnell in hopes of persuading her to adopt a class pet. They were successful! Though many animals were suggested (yorkie, chinchilla, hamster, guinea pig, bunny rabbit, turtle, bearded dragon lizard, even a bear!) the most persuasive essay (written by Aila Brassieur, Kate Sanders, and Colin Tanner) requested a FISH. So we welcome “J.J.” (full name: Jaws, Jr.) as the newest edition to our 5th grade class!

The Art World
I would just like to brag for a minute and mention that we have 73 Members in the Artsonia Hall of Fame. Isn't that fantastic? I would love to have more. All you need is three works of art published (my job--and I've done that), five or more people in you child's fan club (your job), and five or more comments made by you, friends, and family. That's it! For the March newsletter we have two new members of the Hall Fame--Second Grader Isaiah Kerr and Third Grader Luca Genius. Congratulations, boys!
In spite of the extremely weird weather going from hot to cold to hot, we, in Art, are all about Spring & Easter. Kindergarten students are just finishing up their "Cracked Easter Egg Families" and they are fabulous. First Graders made beautiful stained glass window with a cross and beautiful Easter Bunnies. Second Graders learn to weave by making beautiful woven Easter Egg Place Mats and have begun working on gorgeous symmetrical butterflies. The Second Grade hall will be decorated with these lovely pieces of artwork.
Third Grade is painting their gourd bugs. These bugs are bright, colorful, and "Springy"--not really realistic--but very Cute. I've included some pictures of them working. Fourth Graders are creating their Picasso Portraits--a painful process while learning, but with rewarding results. They will be colored with cray pas and parents, you will want to frame them!
My new Fifth Grade Class and my new 7th Grade Class are making Zentangles. They are really fun to design and color. Google it! Fifth Graders are doing their first or last initial while Seventh graders traced three overlapping hands and arms and are Zentangling them. All will be displayed in the Art Hallway. If you have never checked out the Fine Arts Building, come take a peek. I have the prettiest Hall at OLQH.
My third nine weeks class will be selling an Abstract at the school auction created by Mr. Jay Bowdon (local artist) with help from Alana Arredondo, William Bright, Brycen Duplechain, Gabriella Ragusa, Nathan Roach, George Trappey, JC Vanek, Hannah Williams, and Brenda Foshee. It is entitled, "Into the Future" and it is gorgeous. Be sure to bid on this fabulous picture to help earn money for the school.
Remember, in Art we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
