Careers resolutions for 2017
Top tips for final year students!
“Two weeks to go till semester 2 – the Careers Centre recommends you follow the steps below to ensure you make the most of the summer of 2017”
1. Update your CV
If a potential employer asked you for your CV today do you have a version you’d be happy to send? Make sure you always have an updated CV you’re proud of.
- Follow advice on our website, note the difference between a CV for postgraduate study and a professional CV.
- On your return to university attend a CV workshop. (eg Writing great CVs & applications - 26 January; CV lunchtime express - 1 February).
2. Secure a job after graduation
Don’t despair if you haven’t already secured a job for after graduation. Yes some of your friends may already have jobs but there are plenty of opportunities still out there - you just have to search for them.
- Make sure you are signed up to Careers Centre Jobsonline – over 600+ jobs each week
- Use the Graduate Jobs and Careers A- Z section of our website to find vacancies
3. If applying for postgraduate study
This is the time many masters courses commence their application process, so start putting together your application.
- The Careers Centre website has excellent information on all aspects of postgraduate study
- If you are Scottish, look at University of Edinburgh’s Highly Skilled Workforce Scholarships – which are awarded for a variety of courses.
4. Assessment Centre/Interviews - preparation is the key to success
- Use all the resources available on our website
- Video/phone interviews – more employers are using these so try out our interview simulator to let you see how you perform. Keep trying till your happy with the results
- Attend workshops to help you become more confident (eg Interview Skills - how to succeed at interview - 24 January; Assessment Centre workshop skills session with PwC - 10 February)
5. Network
Connect with alumni working in positions you’d like to be in or for organisations to which you are applying. They may be able to give you useful advice on why they were successful and tips on your application
6. Use the Careers Centre
- If you are completing an application for a job or master’s programme while on your festive break, you can still get feedback from a careers adviser using our on-line advice system
- Don’t know what you want to do or where to find opportunities? Book an appointment with an adviser to discuss the options open to you.
