Happy Halloween from 4K!
Reader's Workshop
We’ve got readers and we’ve got a workshop so put it all together its readers workshop. So we know it’s November now, but we are going to talk about October readers workshop. So let’s begin.
We finished reading the Tiger Rising by Kate Dicamillo. It was and is a great book and we definitely recommend it. It was sort of a more depressing book, but it ended all happy. So about the book, Rob is a kid growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. His mom died several months ago due to cancer. Now he lives with his dad in a motel called the Kentucky Star. Then there's a new girl at school named Sistine. Then there's a tiger all locked up and Rob and Sistine help free the tiger. Then at the end Rob's Dad shoots the tiger with a gun and then the story ends when Rob and his Dad become happy again. Us and the class enjoyed the book very much.
Right now we started a new book, it's called: Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling. I like it and it’s kind of a mystery and we're only on chapter two but its a series book so there’s something next. I don’t know what's really going to happen next but I predict something life changing is going to happen. Mr. Potter is the main character right now and there's a talking cat and a secret man who about Harry and people are doing mysterious things. In this book there is mystery and fiction because this would never happen. Everyone wants to know what happens next!
So let's begin with the new choice menu. We have 3 activities due on day 6. We have day 1-6 to work. Day 6 is Readers Workshop days. So it's enough time to finish everything we have to do in only 6 days. Reading is about a half hour each day so it's easy to complete. We have 4 things open to us right now. Skill activity can change each week. This week it was making our character's traits more strong. Strategy groups is when we meet with our groups named after our teachers favorite foods. I’m a sushi, then our teacher gives us work to do. Reader's response is where, in our readers notebook, we write a little summary of our book. And last we have vocabulary and that's where we have a work packet to do throughout the days of 1-6.
Writer's Workshop
Hi! This is Brenden and Evan. We are here to talk about Writers Workshop. In writing, we have been writing realistic fiction stories. In my opinion, they are all really good. I hope you like them when you see them. There are mystery, action, you name it. If you don’t like that then I don’t know what to tell you. If you are interested just ask your child to give you their book after they finish it. Thank you for listening. Remember all you have to do is ask your kid.
Math
We learned lots about math but let's keep it short. One of the most the important things we learned this month was prime and composite numbers. Prime means there is only one set of factors to answer the question which would be 1 times whatever the number is. So 11 is a prime number because the only equation that equals it is 1 times 11 so that's prime.
And don’t forget composite. Composite means a times fact that has more than one set like 24 because 12 times 2 equals it as well as 1 times 24.
Another thing we learned is square numbers. Square numbers is a times fact and both factors are the same number. For example 10 times 10 equals 100, so 100 is a square number or another example, 9 times 9 equals 81. 81 is a square number.
The final main thing we learned this month is multiples and factors. Multiples are the same number more than twice to get an answer like 3+3+3+3+3+3+3=21, so 21 is a multiple of 3. A factor is, as you know, 2 or more numbers that equal a product like 2*2=4 and 100*1=100.
Thank you for reading this Kaubin Chronicle article by Jack and Jared.
Science
Hey epic people! Today we are talking about what we are doing in science! This week in science we were using magnets. We are trying to figure out what attracts the magnets. For example, really all iron and some metal attract magnets. Like a lot of water bottles do not attract magnets. About two weeks ago we were talking about parallel circuits and series circuits parallel circuits. Parallel circuits are lined up and series goes in a circle. And we did this thing where you decide what kind you think is better to put on a Christmas tree! I chose parallel because it can go around and around the Christmas tree!
Social Studies
So far in social studies we have been talking about citizenship, and as a citizen of the town or city, and how we have responsibilities and rights in the town, or city. And we also have responsibilities and rights for the state, and the U.S.A. We also have responsibilities and rights that our parents expect of us as citizens of our house like doing our homework before we play video games, and making our bed every morning. Also our school gives us responsibilities like doing our homework and reading everyday and bringing our homework every day. The government makes responsibilities but they can’t make you make your bed every day. Here are some examples that your town gives you like no littering in the park or anywhere, picking up trash and putting it in the trash, throwing your trash in the trash can... you get the idea. You can make sure that you are safe on school buses and any type of vehicle, and make sure you put on your seat belt every time even if it’s a 1 minute drive because you never know if you could get in a accident. And you have to go by the laws like if you go over the speed limit then you have to pay a bill because you didn’t follow the law. Thank you for reading this Kaubin Chronicle.
Week of Respect
This was our schedule during Week of Respect!
M - World Bullying Prevention Day
T - Wear your favorite outfit for Respect Yourself
W - Wear your favorite Jersey for Respect Others
TH - Wear Lizzie Haddon gear for Respect Your School Community
F - Wear green for Respect Your Environment
This article will tell you about the week of respect. On the first day of the week of respect we wore blue. We wore blue because it was anti-bullying. Anti-bullying is important because if you get bullied, then you might get hurt. On Tuesday we wore our favorite color because it meant we respected ourselves. On Wednesday we wore our favorite sports teams which was cool to see what everyone likes about sports. On Thursday we wore school clothes to represent our school pride. On Friday we wore green for respect our environment which is important to keep all the animals alive. That's it!
Read Aloud
In Read Aloud we read a Book called The Tiger Rising. It was about a boy named Rob who found a tiger in the woods. Then, Rob met a girl named Sistine who wanted to set the tiger free. They find out that the tiger belongs to Beauchamp from the Kentucky Star Motel. Rob lives at the Kentucky Star and he hates Beauchamp. So he set the tiger free. But after the set him free, Rob’s Dad kills the tiger. Also, Rob got bullied by the Threemonger boys. That allowed us to infer many things about the story, including that Rob was the protagonist and the Threemonger Boys were the antagonists. And that is The Tiger Rising folks! This is reporters Tess and Lily signing off.
Bus Safety Drill
During the bus drill we got on the bus and went to our seats. Mrs. Macconi gave us a lecture on safety. She told us about the top exit and back exit. We would go out the top exit if the bus got in an accident because the normal door would either be facing up or blocked by the ground. We went with our 2nd grade buddies. They are from 2O this year. Then we had to jump out of the back of the bus. We would normally do this if we got in an accident and the top door was blocked. An alarm goes off when the back is opened. When we jumped off there were blue and tan mats under us. We learned everything about how to stay safe on a bus.
Our Thoughts About Spanish & Chorus!
Spanish
You work with Spanish and have fun and sometimes listen to music and do projects. And you learn new words and do lots of games you do fun games. And you talk a lot about Spanish and watch funny videos. And you can draw fun things. And you can tell the teacher when you learn as many words as you want to. And you can tell your parents as many words that you learned in Spanish. Chorus In chorus, we listened to a bunch of Halloween songs like the Addams family, then we listened to vampire buddies. In Chorus, there's 4K, 4N, and 4L so it can get loud!
Halloween Party
This month has been a blast! Especially because Halloween just came around the corner! We even got to have a Halloween party. Some of the festivities included mystery boxes, pictionary ,candy corn relay, ball toss, and mummy wrap! At the end of the party Mrs. Gaul revealed what was in each of the mystery boxes... we actually touchedREAL cow liver!!!!!! We were so disgusted and the brains were cauliflower. Some other things we did were pictionary. The way you play pictionary is you are assigned a word or a thing and you MUST draw it and your partner MUST guess it right or you will not get the point. At the end of the game the team with the most points wins a prize! Also we got to play the mummy wrap! The way that you play is you need to get into a two person group. You have to decide who will wrap and who will spin, then, the spinner has to spin the opposite way that the wrapper will wrap! The first team to finish the roll of streamers wins! And we also had a candy corn relay which is where you had a fake bone hand and you had to scoop up 1 piece of candy corn and then you had to get it to the other side, then into the other bowl. Whoever had the most candy corn won!! And then there was another round where you were blind folded but that time we did wayyyy more than 1. THANK YOU MRS. GAUL FOR SUCH A GREAT PARTY!
