Midway Mustang Memo
May 2019
End of the Year Information
Dear Parents,
As this school year comes to an end, we reflect upon all that has been accomplished. Our students continue to make us proud as they show their artwork in Art Exhibits, perform and share their musical talent, compete in math competitions, earn praise for perfect attendance, and excel in academics. One of our third grade students, Gretchen Crute, was awarded 1st runner up in the Fire Safety Poster Contest! Congratulations!
We extend our gratitude to our amazing staff who are dedicated to the well-being of all students. Our PTO recognized all staff during Teacher Appreciation Week in May. A special thank you to Mrs. Crute and Mrs. Enger for organizing this week of activities, treats, gifts, cards, and kindness.
Many of our Midway Family members participated in our first annual 5K Mustang Trot sponsored by PTO at Denmark High School. It was a beautiful morning for a walk!
Students enjoyed playing games with classmates and engaging in activities on Field Day. Coaches Samples and Spota did a remarkable job in organizing this fun-filled event!
Partners in Education are local businesses that feel a connection with our school. They support us with materials, volunteers, and monetary donations. Many thanks to Solvay for their recent donation of microscopes for our Science Lab, for providing a field trip for 5th graders to their facility, and for their generous monetary donation for our Science/STEM Lab. Also, a special thank you to Tae Kwan Do for their partnership and plans to support, along with their generous monetary donation for the Science/STEM Lab.
As we look forward to next year and welcome new families, we hosted our first Kindergarten Sneak Peek on Saturday, May 18th. Over 70 families joined us to learn about kindergarten and Midway!
This year at Midway, we have been intentional about cultivating a literacy-rich environment for our students. We’ve also focused on the importance of student choice in selecting reading materials as well as ensuring students are engaged and enjoy what they are reading. These are key components in fostering a love of reading to last a lifetime. Students have worked diligently throughout the school year and made such progress. We don’t want to lose ground in the summer. Spending a little time each day reading, writing, and practicing math skills make a huge difference. As parents, your partnership is critical to make sure students maintain and continue to grow academically during the summer months. Students will have access to computer resources all summer for both MyOn (reading) and Dreambox (math).

Counselor's Corner
As we get closer to the end of the school year and spring fever has begun. Parents, and teachers, might wonder how to keep students focused on ending the school year with a bang.
Here are 5 tips to help your child end the school year strong:
1. Set goals. What is something your child wants to accomplish at school by the end of the year?
2. Keep a consistent schedule.
3. Continue to communicate with teachers and be involved in your child’s academics.
4. Keep up with attendance. When students aren’t in school they miss important instruction and can quickly fall behind.
5. Make sure your child gets enough sleep. It’s beautiful outside and daylight is lasting longer. Often children want to stay up late. Children need 9-12 hours of sleep each night for them to be able to focus properly in school.
For more information, please do not hesitate to call or email us.

News from the Nurse
The clinic must adhere to the Forsyth County's policy that "because of the possibility of an allergic reaction from sunscreen, this should be treated as a medication. Parents need to bring in the sunscreen with a signed Request for Administration of Medication form."
If your student has any medication in the clinic please remember that it must be picked up by 3:30 on May 24th. Medication cannot be kept in the clinic during the summer so medication not picked up will be discarded.
Thank you to all the wonderful Midway families that have been so welcoming to me during my first year here. I hope each one of you has a safe, happy and relaxing summer.
Midway Cafe News
What an amazing year it’s been!! I can’t believe we’re already in May & it’s coming to an end. However, we still have a few weeks of school and there are some changes that occur in the café in May. The biggest one being, that as of May 1st, we can no longer charge any meals, our system won’t allow it. All meals must be pre-paid for the remainder of school. What we run into in May is student’s use up their money by purchasing extra items, then when they need to purchase a meal there’s no money and our system will no longer charge. Its’ very important to make sure your child has enough money on their account to cover meals AND the extras they purchase, OR you may request a block on the account for the month of May & they’ll be allowed to purchase meals only. That way you will know exactly how much they need for the remainder of the year. I would just need something in writing stating “no extras for May” if you choose to do that.
*PLEASE NOTE* any money remaining on their account rolls over to next year. It will always be there until used or a refund is requested. As long as your student is in a Forsyth County School their funds will follow them. Please make every effort to know your child’s balance and keep it funded. Our policy states that we are to provide a courtesy meal consisting of a cheese sandwich and milk if the account is not funded. We do everything we can to avoid that ever happening here! Prices are:
Breakfast - $1.50 plus extras purchased
Lunch - $2.60 plus extras purchased
Please contact me if you have any questions. We love our students & want to be sure they’re taken care of properly here in the café.
We still have lots of fun things still going on here at Midway these last few weeks. Field trips, field day, graduation for our awesome 5th graders. We want you to know that it has been an honor to serve your children this year, they are each and everyone such a blessing. Seeing their smiling faces truly makes our day. Thank you for trusting us to feed them this year. We love them all! We hope you have a great rest of the year and a wonderful summer! Hope to see you before the year is through.
