Unlock the Magic of Reading!
"Unlock the Magic of Reading!" is our theme for reading month in March! We are excited to have many fun activities and dress up days throughout the month. A calendar of all the activities went home on Friday, February 23rd. We will be welcoming a magician twice during the month and look forward to everyone reading as much as they can!
Mrs. Kennedy's Class
Puberty Lessons for 4th and 5th grade.
During the latter half of March students in fourth and fifth grades will begin our Board of
Education approved curriculum, Puberty, The Wonder Years. Fifth and fourth grade
families will be receiving notes from our health education teacher, Mrs. Olmsted, about
what subjects are covered and discussed, and ideas for ways to discuss these topics
with your child. You are invited to come look at the curriculum during Northwest
Elementary’s upcoming conferences on March 7th from 4:30p – 7:00p.
Mileage Club
It's almost that time of the year! Mileage Club will soon be here! After Spring Break the students will be able to participate in a walking/running program called the Feelin' Good Mileage Club. Students will be able to walk and/or run the mileage track at their recess time. There is no special equipment needed and the walking course is on the school grounds.
Physical activity is important for all children and the Feelin' Good Mileage Club provides the opportunity for all students at NWEL to participate and earn prizes!
Please look for more details in the next newsletter. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me 817-4704, ext. 4889.
Thank you!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Drop-Off
Pick-Up
If you will be picking your child up, please make sure to send a note to the teacher, or call the office. If calling the office, please do so before 3:00 p.m. This will allow us to get lists finalized and given to the teacher. If you call after this time, your request unfortunately will not be honored. We will not pull children off the bus for late calls. You will need to meet them at the bus stop. When picking up your child please park in a designated parking spot and not along the drop-off curb. Make sure to bring a photo ID. Parents are asked to wait in the cafeteria until students are dismissed. Students will be dismissed by grade starting at 3:32 p.m on full days, and 2:27 p.m. on Early Release days. When exiting the parking lot please do not turn around in the Lansing Avenue Baptist Church parking lot.
Parking Lot
Thank you for your continued patience with the volume of traffic during our drop-off and pick-up times! You are doing a fantastic job of parking in parking spaces, driving slowly in the parking lot and being timely in your efforts. Please remember when dropping off a student to only drop them off when you have reached the sidewalk.
Morning Tardiness
We encourage promptness since tardies affect everyone and disrupt classroom time. One of the most valuable life skills a student can learn from his/her parent/guardian is the responsibility of arriving at school every day on time. Morning is the time when important school news is announced, teachers define the plans for the day, and instructional goals are reviewed and set. The whole tone of a child’s school day is set in the first part of the day.
Main doors open at 8:15 a.m.
School starts at 8:25 a.m.
Students not in their classroom seat by 8:35 a.m. shall be considered tardy.
If the supervisory aides are not present when you drop off your student, they are tardy. Please make sure to come in the office and sign them in.
Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. will be marked as a morning absence.
Doctor appointments/professional appointments are excused with a doctors note.
Students must be in school at least half of the day, to count as a full day.
Please help support your child in learning habits that will help them be successful at school and throughout life. If you need help or have concerns getting your child to school on time please contact the office. We are here to help.
Medicine Procedures
- Do not send any medication on the school bus. Medication could easily be taken by the wrong child when it is not monitored by an adult. It is the parent's responsibility to bring medication into the Northwest Elementary office and check it in with a secretary.
- Over-the-counter medications (cough drops, Tylenol, Tums) must have a doctors order.
- No staff member will be permitted to dispense non-prescribed, over-the-counter (OTC) medication to any student with out a medication form filled out by a prescribing physician.
