Rotate or Rotation
To spin or turn on an axis
Earth's Rotation
Earth rotates on an imaginary line called an axis that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. It takes Earth 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis.
Day and Night
As Earth rotates, one side of the Earth is facing the Sun while the other side is facing away from the Sun. The side facing the Sun experiences day while the side facing away from the Sun experiences night. The rotation of the Earth is what causes us to have the day/night cycle.
Is the Sun moving?
As we stand on the surface of the Earth we are continually turning towards or away from the Sun. This makes it look like the Sun is moving, but we are actually what is moving. Earth's rotation causes the Sun to look like it is rising in the East and moving across the sky until it sets in the West. It also causes our shadows to change direction, grow longer, and then shrink throughout the day.
