Virtual & Cache Memory

The Differences

What Is Virtual Memory?

If your a person who multitasks alot, and you don't have whole load of memory. Your PC will start to use hard drive space since the RAM and Cache is already full. Virtual memory is the slowest of all types of memory. Virtual Memory can also be used on CD/DVD's and Floppy disks etc.

Virtual memory is only used in the circumstance when your Cache and RAM are completely full. Temporary data is stored on the HDD, such as chrome tabs that can't fit on the RAM. The way to get around using virtual memory since it is quite slow, is to add more RAM to your system.

What is Cache Memory?

Cache, its a really small memory but extremely fast. Level 1 lives in the CPU meaning it doesn't have long to travel a long way. You can also get different levels of cache. Level 1 and Level 2. Level 2 is on normally on a separate chip. Level 1 being the fastest. Normally the come in sizes from 1MB to 12MB. (Currently)

The Differences

Cache - Fastest Storage in a PC.

Cache - 2 Levels, Level 1 and Level 2
Cache - Very small storage sizes

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VM - Only used when RAM and cache is full.

VM - Slowest storage in the PC, unless you have an SSD.

VM - If you know what you are doing, you can save the temp storage and continue you to use it after.

Cache Memory is a high speed memory device which stores high speed data from the processor before sending it to RAM. Since RAM works at a slower rate than the rate of which the processor sends the data.
