Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day!
National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry which takes place each April, was introduced in 1996 and is organized by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.Poem in Your Pocket Day takes place every year on a day during National Poetry Month.
On this day, a poem is selected, carried with you, and shared with others such as a friend, grandparent or neighbor. The beauty of Poem in Your Pocket Day is its simplicity. Typically, poems are shared on this day in classrooms and with friends, senior centers, nursing homes, hospitals, libraries, bookstores, etc. There are many creative ways to distribute poems, such as in the form of a folded-paper animal or object, a bookmark, a decorated scroll, or a poem tree. It can be mailed to a far away friend or relative to arrive on this day. This year, since we're social distancing, our Jordan/Jackson family is sharing our poems virtually. Enjoy! If you share your child's poem through social media, use the hashtags #pocketpoem and #JJPride
