John Wetten celebrates 92nd birthday at namesake school
Last week John Wetten came to celebrate his 92nd birthday at John Wetten Elementary. He got to meet with all the students during their lunch time, his former secretary Linda Roethe came to visit, and everyone got a slice of cake!
Some of the parent volunteers who helped with the event remember Mr. Wetten as the principal when they attended school in Gladstone.
New program preps students with disabilities for jobs
This fall, Gladstone High launched a national program, the Practical Assessment Exploration System [PAES]. The program serves students with disabilities who are 18 to 21 years old. It uses a simulated work environment to assess students in a wide range of job skills. Gladstone is the first school in Oregon to implement the program.
The program uses a simulated work environment to bring the workplace into the classroom. Teachers are supervisors, and students are their employees. Students punch a time clock and work independently, earning simulated money they can spend in a school store.
In class, students are busy with tasks like wiring circuits, making change, fitting pipes, sorting mail, or measuring ingredients. The program offers five job strands, from Business/Marketing, Consumer Services, and Computer Technology, to Construction/Industrial and Processing/ Production. Each strands includes several job options.
"Students learn new skills they can use in the job market, and how to work independently," said teacher Julie Troelstrop. "They are also discovering their strengths and what kinds of work they are interested in."
Two Gladstone students qualify for All-state Choirs
“Both of these outstanding singers bring great leadership and dedication to the our choirs! I’m thrilled that they get the opportunity to represent our district in their respective ensembles!” said Choir Director Josh Weir.
Key Club plants native species in Nature Park
Eight members of the Gladstone High Key Club helped with the replanting of Big Maple Grove at the Gladstone Nature Park last weekend, working with FOGNAP volunteers Carey Salisbury, David Michael, and Bruce Hildreth.
"They were enthusiastic in spite of the rain!" said Nancy Eichstadt, coordinator of Friends of the Gladstone Nature Park [FOGNAP]. "Together they helped plant 153 native plans to that side of the park and added 50 milkweed plants to the Butterfly/Pollinator Hill."
