Wolverine MS/HS Update V2 E1
Reminders and Updates
* Important Announcement: Both of our bus drivers, Mr. Grim and Mr. Sackrider, are out sick for the next 7-10 days. Fortunately, Mr. Bolinger will be able to take Mr. Sackrider's students, but all of the children picked up by Mr. Grim will have to be transported by car to school starting Tuesday, November 16th through Tuesday, November 23rd. Please remember to travel in the direction from the elementary school to the high school when dropping off.
1. Help us Grow as a District!
We are in the process of creating our very first district Strategic Plan. Basically, this will be the path we follow for the next 3-5 years in order to make positive changes happen in our schools. Because we are YOUR school, we really need YOUR input about what things we do well and what areas you think we should improve. We invite all parents, K-12, to attend a 30-45 minute session with Mr. Rick Diebold (former Vanderbilt principal, current MASB representative) on Monday, November 29th in the HS Cafeteria from 8:00am-8:45am OR from 5:00pm-6:00pm on the same day. You can come to either one if you're willing to help.
2. Schedule Updates
Nov 24th 1/2 Day Thanksgiving Break
Nov 25th & 26th No School Thanksgiving Break
Dec 9th 1/2 Day Students: 8:00am start, 11:35 am end for students
Dec 23rd-Jan 2nd No School-Christmas and New Year Holidays
3. Announcing a New Position at WCS
We received a $200,000 grant from the state in order to hire a school social worker or a guidance counselor. This person will primarily be in the MS/HS working to support students' mental/emotional needs and working to create more supports for college and career readiness. We will let everyone know when/if this position is filled.
4. 1/2 Days are No Longer Late Starts!
We apologize our Oct 8th late start caused so many issues! We have decided to switch back to regular early dismissals when we do teacher PD.
5. Calls from Graduation Alliance
Some of you may have received calls from Graduation Alliance. Our apologies for not letting you know sooner what this was all about. Here is a link to their website which describes the services they provide--for free: https://www.oakland.k12.mi.us/students/graduation-alliance
If your child is struggling either attending school or with their work, they provide free support to you--if you choose to accept it.
6. Mrs. Olds is Transitioning Back to the Classroom
Mrs. Olds was born to be a teacher. Even though I always felt extremely lucky to have her as our elementary principal, the call of the classroom has been too great, and Mrs. Olds will be stepping down as elementary principal after Thanksgiving break. She will take over the new STEAM program in the elementary school. Mr. Baughman will be going back and forth between each building to support students, staff and families.
Wildcats to be Proud Of
1. Julian Rohloff: Julian regularly volunteers to clean up our weight room and helps others. He was a leader during the "Apple Baseball" event for the elementary school and was EXCELLENT with the younger kiddos. We really appreciate him at WCS.
2. Remmie Jones: for going into the elementary school DAILY to work in Mrs. Sumbera's class to support our kindergarteners. "Ms. Remmie" is patient, kind, and one heck of a teaching assistant!
3. All our WCS Teachers and Support Staff: America has lost 10% of its teachers, support staff, and administrators since COVID began. It is a stressful time for all of us, but the pandemic has had a particularly challenging impact on those who work in education. Our WCS staff, despite facing these challenges, support one another and our students daily. They cover one another's classes and continue to do all they can to help our Wildcats learn important knowledge and skills. I (Mr. B) am deeply honored to work with every single teacher and support staff member in our district.
