Thriving in Third

April 19th Edition

Dear Parents,

What an exciting week of exploration and planning! Between programming ozobots to show different types of energy and planning for Market Day, we sure have had a busy and fun week in third grade!

If you are signed up to have lunch with your child, please be sure you have them at the cafeteria doors at 1:55 or earlier to return back to class. If you plan to take your child for the day after picnic lunch, please still have them join third grade at 1:55. Then you can then check them out from the office and we will send them to their classroom to collect their things. Thank you for your help with this!

We are looking forward to sharing your third grader's growth this school year during our virtual parent teacher conferences. Your child’s teacher will be reaching out to you soon to sign-up for a 15 minute time-slot, offering options through May 3rd. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!

A Sneak Peek at Our Week

ELAR - How do we have freedom in writing? Students create a cause and effect writing piece.

MATH - Why is it important to effectively collect, organize, and analyze data? Students showcase learning creating frequency tables, dot plots, pictographs and bar graphs.

SCIENCE - What makes things move the way they do? We begin our unit on force and motion this week! Students explore and observe how position and motion can be changed by pushing and pulling objects.

Third Grade Market Day Friday, April 23rd

As part of our social studies unit, "What choices do we make with our money?" We are so excited that on Friday, April 23rd, third graders will have Market Day in their individual classrooms. On this day, your favorite third grader will "sell" (for tickets, not money) an invention or innovation with their classmates. This invention or innovation must be self-created using purchased material and brought into the classroom no later than Tuesday, April 20th. Though it is not required to spend money on materials, if your child chooses to do so, we ask that you spend between $5 and $10 on materials. Innovations and inventions are encouraged to be made at home, though students will have an hour to create their products prior to Market Day.

Through this week, students will earn up to 2 tickets each daily for exhibiting exemplary behavior; showing REACH attributes, grit, positive behavior, and growth mindset in and outside of the classroom. These are the tickets they will use to purchase products at Market Day. No money will be exchanged in the classroom.

We are looking forward to another great week of learning ahead through this amazing activity. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions or concerns. Thank you so much for your support.

A Message from Coach Sharp

Hello Rucker Families,

My name is Coach Sharp and I am one of the PE coaches here at Rucker Elementary. Every year the state of Texas requires students in 3rd-5th grade to complete the Fitness Gram. The Fitness Gram is an assessment that tests students in flexibility, strength and endurance. Your students have already completed 7 of the 8 components of this assessment during their PE class.

The last assessment they will have is the mile run. Students will be completing their mile run during their PE class time next week. This is nothing for them to stress or worry about. We will take them to the sidewalk track behind the school and they will complete 2.5 laps and the PE coaches will note their time.

We are asking that you please help your students be prepared for this run. They need to be wearing running/athletic shoes, they need to bring a water bottle and they should have a big breakfast and snack on their assigned day. Here are the dates that they will complete their mile run. Please note this in your calendar so that your student can be prepared and ready to go.

Wednesday, April 21st Mile Run Classes:

3rd: Mayoral, Rodriguez

4th: Montano, Cizdziel, Graves

5th: Linthicum, Thomas

Thursday, April 22nd Mile Run Classes:

3rd: Haigwood, Nunn/Downs, Carter

4th: Friedrichs, Smith

5th: Sienkiewich, Torres, Fierro

This is of course all weather permitting. As of now it looks like a low chance of rain and nice weather but this is Texas and we know that can change in a second! If we have to reschedule, I will send out another email with the updated dates. If you have any questions, please email me at

Your classroom teacher won't have the information for this assessment so emailing me directly is best.

Thank you for your support with this and have a great day!
